Yankees fans deal with lost season

Posted by Bryan Tsao
River Avenue Blues contemplates (for the first time in over a decade) what it means to give up a season. Not anything that fans of other teams are unfamiliar with, but it's nice to see the Yankees fans deal with it too for once. (Pardon my schadenfreude.)

Inside MLB’s replay center

Posted by Bryan Tsao
The Boston Globe's excellent sports section takes us inside MLB's new $2.5 million replay center, which will be used to provide replay footage to umpires working all MLB games.
You can slow a picture down so much that you can see the grains of sand and the clay around the bag. You can see whether or not a person has shaved that day," Solomon said. "The commissioner has come around and he's embraced it, because the technology is undeniable. I'm sure there was a time when all of us watched baseball on black and white TVs. Now I bet you everybody in the room has a high-def TV.

Current Marcels updated

Posted by Dave Studeman
Thanks to Sal Baxamusa, our batter projections for the rest of the year have been updated.

Sizemore superstar

Posted by Bryan Tsao
Patrick Sullivan over at Baseball Analysts compares the start of Grady Sizemore's career with other historical center fielders, and finds that he matches up will with the likes of Fred Lynn and Jimmy Wynn. While this obviously in no way means he'll have their careers, it does help put his performance into context.

Free agent compensation list

Posted by Bryan Tsao
MLB Trade Rumors links us a list of projected Elias Rankings of free agents, which determine how much compensation (if any) a team will receive if that player is offered arbitration but leaves as a free agent. A useful resource for fans who are already looking toward the offseason.

Pages Updated

Posted by Dave Studeman
I'm sort of in between traveling gigs right now, so I've updated our team graphs and stats as well as Win Shares through yesterday's games. Lance Berkman has an imposing lead in total Win Shares Above Bench, with 23, and he's likely to be the Win Shares MVP of 2008. We'll return to daily updates of our team graphs and stats next Monday.

Turning Marcel into a gorilla?

Posted by Mike Fast
The Stat Speak blog, of which I am a proud alum, has added a couple of talented writers, Colin Wyers and Brian Cartwright, to the existing crew of Pizza Cutter and Eric Seidman. There's been a lot of good stuff at Stat Speak lately, but I'd specifically like to highlight Brian's latest article, "Turning the monkey into a gorilla", about his projection system. It builds and expands on the concepts from Tango's Marcel the Monkey projection system.

Glavine not welcome?

Posted by Bryan Tsao
Talking Chop certainly seems less than enthused at the thought of the future Hall of Famer returning to the team after labrum surgery.

Umpires, MLB sign agreement on instant replay

Posted by Bryan Tsao
After long negotiations between MLB and the umpires union, an agreement was reached to implement instant replay for fair/foul and home run/not home run calls.

Personally, I can't think of all that many times where something like this comes into play; off the top of my head, a handful of games per season. I like that they're showing a commitment to getting the call right, I just hope that it doesn't end up slowing the games down too much.

Kazmir’s pitch mix

Posted by Bryan Tsao
Dave Cameron notes that Scott Kazmir has been throwing more fastballs and fewer sliders this season, though an astute poster in the comments raises some pitch classification issues.

Friend of THT Tom Tango is running his 6th annual Fan Scouting Report. Hop on over and add your voice to the chorus. It only takes a few minutes. Bryan already told you about it yesterday, but I have a few things to say about the Fan Scouting Report. Plus, another reminder could never hurt.

Rangers prospects in review

Posted by Bryan Tsao
John Sickels runs down the performances of the Rangers' preseason top 20 prospects. Looks like a fairly standard year, with some prospects struggling and others moving their stock up.

Fowler Busts Out As U.S. Beats Taiwan

Posted by Bryan Tsao
The win moves the US team to 4-2 in pool play, and wrapped up a spot in the medal round. Baseball America recaps the game and runs down how the top prospects on the team did.

Scouting report by the fans, for the fans

Posted by Bryan Tsao
It's that time of year again: Tango is doing his sixth annual fans' scouting reports. So head on over to the link and play scout for a few minutes.
