Performance enhancing genes?

Posted by Bryan Tsao
Craig Calcaterra reports that a University of Pennsylvania researcher has discovered a gene that boosts muscle growth in mice, increasing their strength by 50 percent. Apparently, this guy was immediately mobbed by athletes wanting to take the still experimental treatment.

While it's unlikely that this will become a thing in the near future, we'll probably have to start updating our conception of what constitutes "cheating" as newer medical and performance technology is developed.

Metsblog reports that the Mets are offering season ticket holders the opportunity to purchase their actual seats from Shea Stadium for $869, a number with some significance for Mets fans.

Price to the pen?

Posted by Bryan Tsao
R.J. Anderson does some back of the envelope calculations and comes to the conclusion that David Price could be best leveraged as a reliever for the stretch run. Doing so would allow the Rays to get the most out of him while still limiting his innings for the rest of the season, similar to what the Yankees did with Joba Chamberlain last season.

It would have been a more in-depth look if he used the Rays' actual replacement levels by looking at who Price would have actually replaced in the rotation and the pen instead of using generic replacement levels, but the idea definitely warrants further examination.

Ron Mahay?

Posted by Bryan Tsao
Disappointed that your favorite team didn't pick up a lefty reliever for the stretch run? Eric Seidman does a good job of pointing out why a guy like Ron Mahay would likely have minimal impact on the stretch run. It's very possible that more teams are realizing this, making them more reluctant to deal prospects for marginal upgrades at the deadline.

Is parity up this year?

Posted by Dave Studeman
Tim Marchman notes that parity between baseball teams is actually down this year, with only 13 teams within five games of a playoff spot this year.
