Figuring Lee

Posted by Dave Studeman
Joe Sheehan has a great post up at Baseball Prospectus (it's free), pointing out that Cliff Lee hasn't faced nearly the level of competition that Roy Halladay has. We spend a lot of time adjusting baseball statistics for context, but we don't often adjust for one important aspect of context: level of competition. Perhaps we should spend a bit more energy incorporating competitive adjustments into our cutting-edge stats.

Updated Win Shares

Posted by Dave Studeman
Win Shares are now current through yesterday's games. The best player over the last five weeks has been Manny Ramirez, who accumulated five WSAB in that time. Manny has been spectacular for the Dodgers, creating 44 runs in 152 plate appearances. Other hot players have been Roy Oswalt, Curtis Granderson, Dustin Pedroia and Hunter Pence (four WSAB each).

New RSS feeds

Posted by Dave Studeman
One of the things we heard from our readers earlier this year was that you'd like us to improve our RSS feeds. For those of you who don't know, RSS feeds can be used in RSS readers such as Bloglines and Google Reader to help you stay on top of your favorite websites without having to visit them all.

THT's RSS feeds have been relatively simple, with only summaries for each major article. Plus, you had to receive both THT and THT Live posts in the same feed. Several of you told us you'd like more content and more flexibility, so we've responded...

What’s the best run estimator?

Posted by Dave Studeman
I'm a couple of days late on this one, but Colin tested run estimators at Statistically Speaking last Friday. Instead of testing each estimator against the number of runs a team scored in a season, he compared run estimators to the number of runs a team scored in specific innings.

This is a great idea, because the differences you see in innings are more like the differences you see between batters (the differences between teams in a season tend to be much less extreme). Colin's conclusion is no surprise: Base Runs is the best formula. This is an important post that should be getting a lot of attention.
