Managerial Postscript

Posted by Mitchel Lichtman
I’ll keep this one short and sweet. While I was rooting for the Rays to win game 5, and ultimately the series, I am thankful that I don’t have to watch Joe Maddon butcher the game any more than he has during this 2008 post-season.

On my blog, I predicted that Maddon would make at least blunder last night. I didn’t have to wait long, and it was a real doozy...

McCarver’s call

Posted by Dave Studeman
The Phillies just scored in the bottom of the sixth, and Tim McCarver called it. Now, I'm not a big McCarver fan (though I thought he was great when he first started in the booth; so was Joe Morgan) but I have always given him bonus points for virtually "calling" Luis Gonzalez's bloop single off Mariano Rivera in the 2001 World Series. One of the greatest calls in baseball broadcasting history.

He almost did the same thing tonight. With Grant Balfour on the mound, McCarver noted that Balfour is adept at inducing pop flies (not quite statistically true, but close enough) and just forgot to add the insight he had in the 2001 Series: that the infield was playing in. Iwamura couldn't catch up to Werth's pop fly in shallow center, and the Phillies took the lead, 3-2.

And Baldelli homers. 3-3.

Scouting report on Cole Hamels

Posted by Mike Fast
Prior to Game One of the World Series, I brought you my scouting report on Rays' starter Scott Kazmir. I intended to bring you my scouting report on the Phillies starter at the same time, but I ran into a little wrinkle because I realized at the last moment that Cole Hamels had added a new pitch in September, so I had to redo my analysis with that in mind.

Best Civic Anniversary Ever?

Posted by Chris Jaffe
On October 27, 2008, the Philadelphia Phillies will try to claim their second world title. As it turns out, that day will also be the 326th anniversary of the town's founding. (My source for the latter tidbit is wikipedia, so take that as you will).

Could be an interesting anniversary for the city of Brotherly Love.

Can Matt Stairs and the Phillies break the Canadian curse?

Posted by Christian Trudeau
In 1969, the year the Expos and Canada first joined the Major Leagues, the Amazin’ Mets shocked the baseball world by winning the World Series. In the Mets bullpen was Ontario native Ron Taylor, who recorded a save in Game Two. Since that victory, it has become incredibly difficult for a team carrying a native Canadian on its roster to win the World Series.

In fact, there have been only two exceptions to this cruel rule since then...

Scouting report on Scott Kazmir

Posted by Mike Fast
Starting the World Series for the Rays tonight is Scott Kazmir. He's been ably covered already by our own Josh Kalk and by Harry Pavlidis at Cubs f/x, but I'll throw in my two cents on his scouting report this morning with the biggest game of Kazmir's life approaching tonight.

Scott Kazmir doesn't have a lot of pitches or a lot of deception. What he does have is good stuff that is hard to hit, particularly for left-handed hitters. He has a little trouble keeping his off-speed stuff in the zone.

With a note from Jamie:

The offshore sportsbooks opened Tampa as a 58% favorite in the World Series. Most or all of the difference between that number and mine is due to Brett Myers; I've bet on Myers in virtually every game he's started this year, so clearly I have a higher opinion of him than the market does.

The holy grail of minor league stats

Posted by Steve Treder
If you're anything like me (and if so, my condolences), something you've wistfully longed for is a comprehensive online database of minor league statistics—a minor league counterpart, if you will, to Sean Forman's stupendous baseball-reference.com.

Well, I have some bad news, and some good news.

The bad news is, we don't have it yet. But the good news is, it's on its way.
