The 2009 Marcels

Posted by Dave Studeman
The 2009 Marcel projections are now available from The Book blog. If you haven't heard of them, Marcel projections ("so simple, even a monkey can do them") are very simple yet still effective projections based on each player's previous major league experience. They're pretty good for players with a couple years of major league experience. If you're interested in how Geovany Soto or Joey Votto might perform next year, you might want to look at other projection systems, too.

Giant Affeldt

Posted by Dave Studeman
Jeremy Affeldt, the left-handed reliever from the Reds, signed a two-year deal with the Giants today. The deal is reportedly for $8 million. It doesn't take too many brain cells to call this a very good deal for the Giants. Keith Law ranks Affeldt the 15th-best free agent available (subscription required). A quote from Law's column:
He looks like one of the few potential bargains among relievers in this market, and perhaps the best candidate to become a closer for a team that doesn't want to pay the markup on a proven guy.

Tampa Hot Stove

Rays Index outlines the issues facing the Rays this offseason, inning by inning. The Rays' biggest need is probably their bullpen (which, paradoxically, was their greatest strength this year. Such are the ways of the 'pen.) and their trade chips include Jeff Niemann, Edwin Jackson and... Carl Crawford?

Pujols NL MVP

Posted by Dave Studeman
Albert Pujols won the National League Most Valuable Player award today, so there is some justice in the heart of the BBWAA. He received 18 first-place votes—Ryan Howard got 12 first place votes and Brad Lidge received the remaining two.

In a surprise (at least to me), Ryan Braun came in third and Manny Ramirez finished fourth. CC Sabathia finished sixth (Lance Berkman was in between the two)! Carlos Delgado finished ninth and Aramis Ramirez finished ahead of Hanley Ramirez. Chase Utley wasn't even in the top ten. In fact, Geovany Soto finished ahead of him.

These findings are presented without editorial ranting. You're welcome.

Rich and Bill: The Handbook

Posted by Dave Studeman
I've been so busy lately that I haven't had time to indulge in one of my favorite winter pastimes: perusing the latest Bill James Handbook. But Rich Lederer has a review, and I feel pretty confident saying that you should buy yourself a copy.

Are we misinformed?

Posted by Dave Studeman
Francisco Rodriguez's agent claims that K-Rod hasn't lost velocity, he just held back a little last year to improve his command. Jeff Sullivan picks that one apart.

Free agent setup men

Posted by Dave Studeman
Aaron Gleeman is worried about the depth of the Twins' bullpen now that Pat Neshek has opted for Tommy John surgery. The result is a nice review of options in the free agent market. Jeremy Affeldt, anyone?
