Thursday, January 08, 2009Past THT AnnualsPosted by Dave StudemanYou can now read past editions of the Hardball Times Annual for free. A PDF file of the 2004 Annual is available on our FTP site, and the 2007 and 2008 editions are available at Wowio. Here's the link to the 2007 book, and here's the link for 2008. We're working on the 2006. And, if you like those, purchase the 2009 Annual in actual print form. It won't be available for free until next year. John Smoltz to the Red Sox?Posted by Chris NeaultThere are rumblings out of Atlanta that the John Smoltz era may soon be coming to an end. Multiple sources have the Red Sox as the high bidders for his services. After undergoing right shoulder surgery that was widely thought to be a sure thing to end his magnificent career, Smoltz is apparently on the mend and throwing well enough to draw interest from clubs. He is not likely to return before the end of May at the earliest. Monday, January 05, 2009Ozzie’s hook quickensPosted by Dave StudemanDuring the Chisox' World Series year, Ozzie Guillen notably stayed with his starters longer than most managers. That's no longer true, and South Side Sox investigates further. Sunday, January 04, 2009Rating managers by intentional walksPosted by Dave StudemanHere's a nice little analysis over at Fire Jim Bowden, rating managers by the situations in which they ordered intentional walks. Saturday, January 03, 2009What 2009 will bringPosted by Brandon IsleibIn Peter Gammons's blog of today, he discusses the upcoming youth movement (citing favorably to Mr. Studeman's piece in this year's Annual) and debunks the idea that this year's spending in New York is new, noting that the "good old days" had plenty of it. (FYI, 39 of the first 61 World Series featured at least one New York team.) Friday, January 02, 2009Dollars per win valuePosted by Dave StudemanDave Cameron has post six on win values, in which he explains how Fangraphs converts wins to dollars. I have a feeling a lot of people will misinterpret this information, so be sure to read closely! The Rays year in reviewPosted by Dave StudemanRays Index looks back over the previous year. It's a fun read of what happened on the leading blog that covered the most interesting baseball story of 2008. Thursday, January 01, 2009Set your TivosPosted by Dave StudemanMajor League Baseball's new cable network is going live in a few hours. Right now, they're running some pretty pictures with nice music in the background. Pretty soon, though, you'll be able to watch Don Larsen's perfect game, and you can catch the rest of their schedule on their site. If you're interested in more background, Maury Brown has posted an interview with the network's CEO. Happy New Year from THTPosted by Dave StudemanWe want to thank all of you for supporting THT the past year, and we hope you have a great 2009. 2008 was a pretty successful year here. Our lineup of writers continued to be strong, we published two great books and one of our favorite bloggers, Shysterball, came on board. We'll do our best to make 2009 just as rewarding for you. |
