HEATER: Week 3

For THT subscribers, the third issue of Heater is available. This week, we finish our overhaul of the pitcher pages with Next Week Forecasts: W, K, and ERA for starters, Saves and ERA for relievers. All numbers are based on True Talent (which itself weighs three years of historical stats) and are adjusted for the schedule.

Also this week is the return of our Minors page. Each of the Radar Trackers put forth the readiest prospects from their own systems; the full list covers 100 names. Commentary is provided by Melissa Lockard, who writes for Scout.com and who has helped compile their Top 300 lists for three years. This page is the one-stop shopping for the next big call-up.

Ballparks graph

Here's a fantastic visual display of ballparks by Jeremy Greenhouse. Jeremy has plotted the dimensions of all major league ballparks onto a standard ballpark diagram, and added "box-whisker" graphs at each dimension to show how much ballparks vary at different parts of the stadium.

You can see how ballparks are narrower in straightaway center, vary more in the alleys, then come closer down the lines. Plus, note the differences in the "boxes" (the "inner" quartiles) and the wider "whiskers" (the outer quartiles) in key dimensions. For instance, it looks like just-left-of-center is fairly standard at about 395 feet, but a few ballparks go way beyond to 430 feet.

Well, just look at it and you'll see what I mean. Excellent graphic.
