Why do I keep using GPA, er, OPS?
Posted by Dave StudemanJustin justifies his continued use of OPS by comparing it to other offensive rate stats for teams over the last three years. He produces the usual results (although, as he kind of admits, this sort of analysis isn't the best way to judge offensive stats for individual batters).
But what I like about his analysis is that THT's rate stat, GPA, ranks just as highly as any other rate stat. I sometimes get asked why we don't switch to other offensive rate stats, and my answer is that GPA is easy to understand, easy to calculate, and as accurate as any other rate stat. Those seem like pretty good reasons to me. And you can find a formula for converting it to total runs in the glossary.
Dave was called a "national treasure" by Rob Neyer. Seriously. Comments about this article can be sent to him through the miracle of e-mail.
