We have a contest winner!by THT StaffOctober 15, 2010 Say congratulations to Gerald Andriole, a senior at Georgetown University, the winner of The Hardball Times' Who Will Win contest. We challenged you: Pick the eight playoff teams. That was in early September—the deadline was Sept. 3, a month before the season ended. The lure was a free copy of the soon-to-be-published 2011 Hardball Times Baseball Annual. The Padres led the National League West by three games. The Rockies were six and a half out with a bullet. The NL East favorite Cardinals were slumping, but they'd been as close as a game behind the Reds a couple of weeks before. They fooled most of you: Only four entrants got all eight teams right; the NL West tripped up most. The first tiebreaker was to name the four teams that would be in the Division Series, which start this weekend. Only one contestant got as many as three, missing only on the Rays. "When I made my picks," Gerald said, "I was almost 100 percent sure the AL side would include the four teams and that the Reds, Braves and Phillies would in from the NL. I was torn between the Giants and Rockies in the West and went with the Giants based on their far superior pitching (and for my friend Sandy, who'e a huge Giants fan). I hadn't been sold on the Padres all year, even though they were a great story and Clayton Richard was one of my best sleeper fantasy picks ever. I didn't think their collapse would be so epic, but I thought it'd be close down the stretch." As a Hoya, Gerald is studying accounting and finance. (He had three job interviews this past week and would love job leads from THT readers.) And the book he's won: "I'd like to give it to one of my friends because I will already be buying it. I think it's a great read for any baseball fan and would love to share my passion with others." Honest, he said that.
