Compete against Derek Carty for cash

Posted by Derek Carty at 8:55am

As you know, I'll be playing daily fantasy baseball leagues this season and writing about them at FanDuel. Now, you'll have the chance to compete against me in my first ever daily league on April 1 for the chance to win cash. And the best part is, entrance is 100% free!

We'll be competing in a FanDuel MLB Salary Cap 35k contest where you have $35k to spend on any nine players you want at the following positions:
P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF

The scoring system is points based:
Hitters: 1B = 1pt, 2B = 2pts, 3B = pts, HR = 4pts, RBI = 1pt, R = 1pt, BB = 1pt, SB = 2pts, Out = -.25pt
Pitchers: W = 7pts, ER = -1pt, SO=1pt, IP = 1pt

Prizes are structured as such:
1st	$100
2nd	$75
3rd	$30
4th	$20
5th	$15
6th	$10

Additionally, anyone who beats me, whether they finish in the top six or not, will receive $5.

So if you're like me and have always wanted to try a daily league, now's your chance to do so, completely free, and with the added bonus of getting to compete against me and win cash! And if you need extra incentive, you will be helping THT make a little money just by playing. All you have to do is click here, sign up (takes less than a minute), and pick your team!

I'm very excited to be playing in daily leagues this year, and I hope some of you will join me!

This season, he'll be contributing to FanDuel and will be linking to all of his work at DerekCarty.com. In his three years competing in expert leagues, he has won 2 titles with 4 top three finishes, including a LABR NL title in 2009, making him the youngest person to ever win a major expert league title. Derek is a proud graduate of the MLB Scouting Bureau's Scout Development Program and is a firm believer in the importance of combining stats and scouting. Derek, how have you never played daily leagues before!? That’s where the TRUE obsession lies

Haha yeah, I kind of figured.  I’ve always wanted to but never did.  I’d really like to set up a system that adjusts for all the different contextual factors for each day, and that’s the main reason I’ve never done it before, because I knew that if I played I wouldn’t do as well as I knew I could if I took the time to set everything up right.  I still haven’t set up such a system this year, but maybe by mid-season I will.

The downfall of daily leagues is the temptation to micromanage. However, if you can instead play pitching matchups decently well and keep an eye on hitters, you do fine

Ha - I hear you, Derek.

I haven’t done daily fantasy games either, but I’ve been highly tempted. One of the reasons I haven’t is the same as yours - I haven’t been ready to make the commitment to give it the level of effort it deserves. ...But, that’s also a decision to protect me from me.

It’s kind of the same reason I haven’t gotten into sports betting, though I’m also tempted there. I think you not only need prep, but you need a bankroll and time to play enough to let your skill emerge over sample size and you need volume so that your profit margins actually begin to justify the time invested—the more you play the lower the opportunity cost per trial because you get to use your prep more times over.

My day job just takes up so much of my time (not that I’m complaining, seriously) and that acts as a big disincentive to try my hand at this stuff. If I ever found myself on disability, there’s a chance I’d either become a sharp or a degenerate.
