The daily grind: 8-22

Posted by Brad Johnson at 5:50am

The Daily Grind provides daily match-up advice based on my every morning waiver wire search. I welcome advice to help make this column more effective. Ownership rates are from Yahoo!

The Fanduel picks are a mixture of Daily League specific advice and information for the more typical fantasy owner.

Today's grind

Those in leagues with same-day moves should refer back to yesterday’s table.

The Fanduel Daily League Players of the Day are:

Pitcher (to start):Yesterday I reported three solid options, but the promotion of Tyler Skaggs to face the Marlins has upped the ante. Keeper league owners should scramble to make the move and even more typical mixed leaguers could benefit from his upside.

Beyond the bright and shiny, there's Matt Harvey at home against the Rockies, Zach McAllister at Safeco, and Tommy Milone against the Twins.

Pitcher (bum): The Mets face Jeff Francis, which makes Harvey all the more palatable as a starter.

The A's are up against Liam Hendriks. The Australian has been downright terrible with an ERA north of 7.00 in 61.2 innings.

Jacob Turner is on the other side of the Skaggs match-up, but he's been a disappointment this season.

Hitter (power): Brandon Moss and Chris Carter against Hendriks have the upper hand. There's also Scott Hairston and Delmon Young.

Hitter (speed): Carlos Gomez has a juicy match-up and Coco Crisp should do quite fine as well.

Tomorrow's grind

Tomorrow is not the best day for pitcher streaming. Bartolo Colon is the lone option among the frequently available.

Reliever watch

Dale Thayer blew the save, but the Padres held on to win anyway.

They couldn’t have waited another 10 days to bring up Skaggs? Now if I want to keep him in your league it’ll be another seven bucks…

And you’ll have to roster him in the next 2 weeks to boot.

I’d try to trade him now while he’s still on the aux roster.

Bartolo won’t be pitching for a while.  50 games as of today.

Yea, I trust that won’t be held against me…

Speaking of A’s who won’t be contributing, Jemile Weeks was demoted.

10 Team H2H. For an owner who has made the playoffs what is the leash on Alex Gordon as he is having another 0fer today?

Very short.

Someone like Carlos Gomez for example could easily be said to have similar RoS expectations and he’s been playing much better than Gordon.

Research shows that hot streaks aren’t predictive of future performance, but cold streaks are shown to have some small predictive value. Gordon is certainly cold and hence possibly “overrated” for RoS.

I’m guessing he’s available in a 10 team format. I also recently snagged Frazier in my 10 team LW league.

Snagged Frazer a while ago when Bonifacio went down originally.

Does Morse, who is also struggling have a similar rope to Gordon or longer.

The problem for me is I clinched into the playoffs so I can afford to ride current cold streaks to a degree. However it just breeds the question how long do I wait since its all about the playoffs?

Morse has a longer leash. He slumping sure, but Gordon’s struggle has been basically all season long.

My main problem is that as constructed, AVG is a weakness.Which inflates the value of a Gordon/Morse.

For what they are worth in 10 team H2H

Looking at totals in offense

R - 2nd
HR - 5th (within 2 of 3rd)
RBI - 4th
SB - 2nd-tied
AVG - 9th

Some arent great options but I’m at .263 avg and next closest is .267

3B AVG/HR (slide Frazer into OF) - Machado,Moustakas,C.Johnson,Reynolds,Chipper,
Headley,Callapso,Scutaro

OF AVG/HR - D.Young,Vicideo,Markakis,Joyce,Hunter,
Frenchy,C.Young,Boesch

OF AVG/SB - Crisp,Pierre,Revere,Davis,Morgan,Stubbs,Aoki,Tabata

Some of those player will never contribute AVG.

Headley and Chipper are excellent options with a modicum of management.

I wouldn’t use any of the guys in your power list.

I like Ben Revere a lot but he has close to a 0% chance for home runs.

You only have the one spot from Gordon, right? Maybe continue holding for now. None of the best options are auto starts.
