The Hardball Times Annual 2008

The 2007 season featured a second World Sereies win in three years for the Red Sox, a miraculous stretch run by the Colorado Rockies, Barry Bonds' new home run mark, and much much more. Read all about it in the Hardball Times Baseball Annual 2008, which features the usual splendid writing from contributors such as Bill James, Tom M. Tango and the outstanding lineup of THT writers.

In addition to the fine stable of THT writers, there are a number of guest writers, such as Bill James and Brian Gunn. You can see what some of our some of our readers thought of the Annual in this THT Note.

The Hardball Times Annual 2004

Okay, so when we published our first annual review, we thought it should be named for the year that was reviewed. Silly us. Still, this book is what it says it is: a 300-page review of the 2004 season. Published just two weeks after the Red Sox won the World Series, the THT Annual recounted all the highlights and lowlights of the year. Click here to read more about the 2004, er 2005, THT Annual.

THT's Bullpen Book

A special project by THT's Dave Studeman and Steve Treder, the Bullpen Book offers a unique look at bullpen usage between 2002 and 2004. Building on the concept of Win Probability Added, the Bullpen Book includes articles and stats covering the history and current state of the bullpen. Click here for more info about the Bullpen Book, including purchase instructions.

The THT 2007 Preseason Book

The THT 2007 Preseason Book, our very first published foray into preseason commentary and predictions, was published in March, 2007. The book features three-year statistical projections for all major league players, as well as previews for each team (contributed by some of the finest team bloggers on the Internet). The Bill James Gold Mine 2008

Bill James is back with a vengeance with the Gold Mine 2008, a typical Jamesian look at the previous season. The Gold Mine and his new website are filled with James' typically trippy writing (regarding Mark Teixeira: "He'll go in the Hall of Fame before I learn to spell his name.") and keen insights ("MVP voting is very friendly to slugging first basemen and RBI men; Hall of Fame voting is not."). There's also a great big added bonus: stats. Not really just stats, but stat tables presented in some new and penetrating ways.

You can pick up the Gold Mine from ACTA Publications.

John Dewan's Fielding Bible

John Dewan's Fielding Bible is a cutting-edge analysis of the state of fielding in major league baseball today. It analyzes players position-by-position and provides top-to-bottom rankings and graphically shows where hits landed against every team.

Other features include a uniquely designed analysis to determine the best corner infield defenders against the bunt, the best middle infielders on the double play and the best outfield throwing arms. Plus Bill James’s brand new Relative Range Factors and John Dewan’s newly designed Zone Ratings. We reviewed the Fielding Bible in this article. You can also read the (admittedly biased) Baseball Graphs review in this article.

Behind-the-Scenes Baseball

Behind-the-Scenes Baseball begins with stories from author Doug Decatur's career as a statistical consultant. He details how teams have successfully used statistical analyses when building a team, making key decisions in a game, and preparing for the postseason. He also details the ignominious failures of teams that have ignored what the numbers have told them.

Part two is the GM IQ Test—what every major league manager and GM should know...but doesn't. Match your wits with some of the smartest baseball gurus out there. There's one manager who will be tough to beat—Houston Astros' manager Phil Garner only missed one question! The third part is a concise look at the Houston Astros 2004 run for the pennant, Decatur's relationship with Manager Phil Garner, and the Astros' amazing 36-10 run and their first-ever postseason series win. It even includes a brief epilogue on the Astros' successful 2005 season.
