Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldTim Redding and two Nationals relievers combined on a one-hitter Wednesday in a 1-0 defeat of the Phillies. Pedro Feliz's second-inning single was the only hit Redding allowed in seven innings. Luis Ayala and Jon Rauch then closed the game out. Redding hadn't pitched since suffering back spasms on March 23, making his performance even more impressive. He struck out two and walked three for the now 3-0 Nationals. It's safe to assume he'll be picked up in a lot of NL-only leagues because of the performance, but he'll be a mediocre play most weeks.
Brian Bannister limited the Tigers to two hits in seven innings Wednesday in the Royals' 4-0 win. The Tigers ended the game with three hits, all of them singles off the bat of leadoff man Edgar Renteria. Bannister struck out four and walked none in an 85-pitch outing. As worried as the Royals are about the eighth inning right now, it was a surprise that Bannister wasn't left in. However, Leo Nunez turned in a perfect frame, and Joakim Soria finished the Tigers off in the ninth. It's a great start for Bannister, who finished the spring with a 5.56 ERA. The Tigers now have to score 996 times in 160 games if they're going to justify all of the silly 1,000-run predictions
Mariners placed RHP J.J. Putz on the 15-day disabled list with mild costochondritis on his right side. Costochondritis is inflammation where cartilage attaches to a rib. The Mariners said Putz felt discomfort on a pitch to Michael Young in the ninth inning last night and had a precautionary MRI today. They don't have any idea how long he'll be out, but it's an awfully unusual injury that could take more than the minimum 15 days. Mark Lowe is the obvious choice to close in his place, though since the Mariners will want to be careful with him, they might give the odd save chance to Sean Green or Eric O'Flaherty. Brandon Morrow wasn't the choice to replace Putz on the roster and simply isn't an option in the closer's role right now. Lowe should be picked up in all formats.
The Mets announced that they expect Pedro Martinez to miss 4-6 weeks with a mild left hamstring strain. Some obviously define mild differently from others. With Martinez done for April, it looks like Mike Pelfrey will likely stick in the Mets' rotation. Orlando Hernandez could be back in about two weeks to claim a spot, but Nelson Figueroa will be needed to make one start anyway before then.
Conor Jackson, who has been weakened by an undisclosed illness for several days, was taken to the hospital after Wednesday's game for treatment. Jackson left tonight's game in the fifth inning. He stuck around for the rest of the contest, but because he was having trouble breathing, the Diamondbacks opted to get him checked out. Expect Chris Burke to start at first base on Thursday.
Victor Martinez (hamstring) expects to avoid the disabled list and said he might even be available as a pinch-hitter in Wednesday's game. "I did a lot of stuff (Wednesday)," said Martinez, "and I didn't feel it. I hit, I threw and I rode the bike. We'll just have to wait and see when I can catch." It's possible he'll be ready to go this weekend.
Jorge Posada was scratch from Wednesday's lineup with a stiff right shoulder. Manager Joe Girardi said Posada believes he hurt his shoulder on a throw to second last night in the fifth inning. The Yankees say they aren't concerned about it and won't send him for tests. Jose Molina is going to play tonight.
Kevin Youkilis tied Steve Garvey's major league record of 193 consecutive games without an error by a first baseman on Tuesday. That's a mouthful, but Youkilis came up as a third baseman, so it is impressive. Garvey set the record 23 years ago and Youkilis called it a "great honor" to be in the same company. Youkilis won his first gold glove in 2007.
