Troy Tulowitzki left Monday's game after appearing to either aggravate his back or twist his left ankle.
A few weeks ago, Tulo suffered from back tightness. His ankle rolled slightly out of the batter's box on Monday. He sustained the injury on a single that capped a two-run, seventh-inning rally. Omar Quintanilla replaced Tulowitzki as a runner and remained in the game at shortstop. We'll update you when more information becomes available.

Chris Carpenter pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out 10 in a victory over the Brewers on Monday.
It was his third complete game of the year, but his first shutout since 2006. Carpenter threw just 99 pitches, so there was never a reason to take him out, even without accounting for the fact that the St. Louis pen was pretty tired. Carpenter has won 11 straight since his last loss to the Giants on June 30. He overtook Zack Greinke today for the major league lead in ERA at 2.16.

Carlos Pena will miss the remainder of the season after fracturing index and middle fingers on his left hand when hit by a CC Sabathia fastball Monday.
He finishes with a .227/.356/.537 line with 39 homers and 100 RBI in 471 at-bats. Willy Aybar will likely take over as the regular first baseman, which makes him well worth using in AL-only leagues. Akinori Iwamura, in turn, will likely receive some of the playing time that Aybar had received.

Clayton Kershaw will miss his scheduled start Friday against San Francisco after bruising his right shoulder running into a fence at Dodger Stadium on Sunday while shagging fly balls in batting practice.
Perhaps the precocious 21-year-old southpaw should remain a spectator during future BP sessions. The Dodgers, already having announced they would go with a six-man rotation, will move everyone up by one day to cover for Kershaw.

Giants activated second baseman Freddy Sanchez from the 15-day disabled list.
Sanchez will return to the lineup immediately. He had been out since late August with a right shoulder strain. Sanchez hit .304 in 56 at-bats for San Francisco before going down with the injury. He was 3-for-9 in three rehab games for Triple-A Fresno.

Cardinals activated RHP Kyle Lohse from the 15-day disabled list.
Lohse will start Saturday against the Braves after being sidelined with a strained left groin muscle. He will be available out of the bullpen on Monday and possibly Tuesday. Lohse's activation means Mitchell Boggs has been bumped to the bullpen.

Ryan Braun is out of Monday's lineup after complaining of "aches and pains" in his shoulder.
"It's just a day off," Brewers manager Ken Macha insisted before the game. He continued: "The trainer thought that it would be best to give him today off. We had a day game yesterday and a night game tomorrow, so it will be almost like he has two days off in a row." Braun should return Tuesday, according to Macha.

Rookie left-hander J.A. Happ was scratched from his scheduled start Monday with a right oblique strain.
Happ, 10-4 with a 2.77 ERA, suffered the oblique injury during batting practice Saturday. He was hoping it would loosen up by Monday afternoon, but no such luck. Jamie Moyer will fill in.

Yankees activated outfielder Brett Gardner from the 15-day disabled list.
Gardner has been on the disabled list since late July with a broken left thumb. He'll split time in center field with Melky Cabrera down the stretch, but is in the starting lineup and hitting ninth Monday afternoon.

Standings

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
