General manager Omar Minaya said Thursday that Moises Alou has a torn left hamstring and will likely undergo season-ending surgery. Alou injured his hamstring Wednesday while playing in a minor league rehab game on his comeback from a strained calf. Even without going under the knife he's probably done for the year. With Alou out of the picture and Ryan Church's status anything but certain, the Mets are definitely in the market for an outfielder. However, Minaya has made it very clear that the team has no interest in Barry Bonds.
Indians released RHP Joe Borowski. Cleveland designated him for assignment a week ago, and that they didn't wait the full ten days to release him reflects minimal interest around the league. Borowski led the league in saves last year, but he's compiled a 5.57 ERA in his 1 1/2 seasons with the Tribe. The 37-year-old might get a few inquiries for his services as the season wears on.
David Ross went 3-for-4 with two solo homers as the Reds defeated the Cubs on Thursday afternoon. The wind was blowing out at Wrigley, but only the Reds were able to capitalize, smacking seven homers off Chicago pitching. Edwin Encarnacion, Brandon Phillips, Ken Griffey Jr., Adam Dunn, and Joey Votto all went deep for Cincinnati. Ross' average has bounced back from last year's miserable campaign, but he now has just three homers in his first 98 at-bats. The Marlins are interested in acquiring him as a backup.
Dave Bush struck out 13 while limiting the Rockies to one run to pick up his fifth win on Thursday. Bush allowed just four hits, lowering his ERA to 4.47. He's been solid at home all year: he entered today's game with a 2.87 ERA in Milwaukee. His home/road split is so dramatic that Milwaukee manager Ned Yost is considering using him as a fifth starter when the team is home, and Seth McClung when the team is on the road. Teams in deeper leagues should stash Bush and use him accordingly.
The Blue Jays' official website reports that Dustin McGowan will likely avoid surgery on his ailing right shoulder. It's huge news for the 26-year-old, as team doctors determined that McGowan's shoulder hasn't suffered any additional damage compared to an MRI performed late last season. He is expected to get a second opinion next week, but for now it seems like he's only dealing with inflammation in the arm.
The Reds official website reports that Aaron Harang (arm) will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained forearm. An MRI came back negative, and Harang has been diagnosed with a forearm strain. Reds GM Walt Jocketty said that he expects him to be ready to return after the two-week stint on the disabled list. In the meantime, Homer Bailey will be called up to replace Harang in his scheduled start on Sunday in Milwaukee.
The Toronto Globe and Mail reports that Vernon Wells has suffered a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring and will be out 4-6 weeks. Wells left Wednesday's game after attempting to steal third base, and didn't come back out for the next inning. The Blue Jays originally said the injury was leg cramps, but clearly that's not the case. Alex Rios is in centerfield with Brad Wilkerson in right on Thursday night, but the Globe and Mail suggests that Toronto could promote Travis Snider from Double-A, where he's hitting .286 with 13 homers.

Game recaps provided by Craig Calcaterra of Shysterball.Brewers 11, Rockies 1: According to the game story, Corey Hart won the All-Star Game vote-off or whatever the hell it is, and was told of this by Yost "as he walked into the Miller Park interview room with his two young children . . . A couple minutes into his news conference, about a dozen of his teammates rushed into the room and sprayed Hart and his children with beer, loudly cheering the news." The parents out there may consider that to be simply awful, but the good people of Wisconsin have been baptizing babies in the stuff for hundreds of years.
Mets 7, Giants 3: Fernando Tatis (3-4, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) continues to be the straw that stirs the drink for the Mets. He's kind of a bendy straw, maybe with one of those little scoopers on the end of it like you get in a Slurpee, but the important thing is that there is a drink involved, and he is definitely stirring it. Well, maybe he's not really stirring it. Maybe he's just moving up in down through the cup lid making that funny noise that kinda sounds like old school scratching. In McDonald's cups anyway. I don't think that happens with Wendy's cups. Sometimes they don't even give you a lid at Wendy's. Cheap bastards.
Pirates 4, Yankees 2: From Hell's heart I stab at thee! The AL clobbers the NL in interleague play this year, but the NL draws last blood.
Reds 12, Cubs 7: Take seven taters, 2 leeks, 2 carrots, a celery stalk, bullion, parsley, water, salt, and butter, and place in a four quart slow cooker on low for seven or eight hours. Stir in evaporated milk and chives, adding salt and pepper to taste. Et voila!
Blue Jays 6, Orioles 5: All-Star George Sherrill blows the save and loses the game in the ninth. Sucks for him, but if it weren't for the dumb every-team-needs-an-All-Star rule, I wouldn't have even had a comment for this game.
Indians 13, Rays 2: Just when the Rays had begun to build a lead, they drop four in a row. Casey Blake (2-5, 3 RBI) is starting audition season off nicely.
A's 3, Mariners 2: Nothin' I hate worse than to see the hard work of a knuckleballer go to waste. R.A. Dickey shuts the A's out through seven, only to watch Brandon Morrow blow it in the ninth and his team go on to lose it in 11. Dickey was in a jam in the early going, but he got out of it. What happened, R.A.?
The bullpen mound is in the opposite direction of the game mound and that makes a big difference for a knuckleballer. It took me an inning to get used to it.
Makes perfect sense, but it's one of those things you'd never think about unless you threw a knuckleball.
Twins 7, Tigers 6: The bullpen bails Kevin Slowey out after a slowey start, and Justin Morneau's 5-5 day powers the Twins back from a four-run deficit.
Phillies 4, Cardinals 1: Ryan Howard is hotter than whoopee in woolens of late: .353 (18-for-51) with eight homers and 18 RBI over the course of his current 13-game hitting streak.
Royals 4, White Sox 1: If Kansas City could throw Greinke, Mahay, and Soria out there every game they'd be in business.
Diamondbacks 7, Nationals 5: Danny Haren gets jobbed out of a win after pitching eight strong innings, but the Dbacks rally in extras. Actually the game didn't truly get started until extra innings, when eight of the game's twelve runs were scored.
Marlins 5, Dodgers 4: Hanley Ramirez is a decent ballplayer (5-6, game winning home run in the 11th). The fact that he only had one RBI was a function of his punchless teammates.
Angels 11, Rangers 10: Lots and lots of crooked numbers. The Rangers were down 10-4, but came back to tie it up and send it to extras. K-Rod pitches for the second night. This time he doesn't blow the save, but it ain't all cream cheese either, as he walked a guy and committed a throwing error. He has 36 saves now. If you're keeping track of such things, you should know that that would have constituted the single-season record until 1972.
You can download a compact version of yesterday's boxscores from Heater Magazine.

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Yesterday’s Home Runs
The following stats are provided by Hit Tracker, which logs the projected “true” distance of each home run (if it were to land uninterrupted at field level) and its "standard" distance, which is corrected for weather conditions. Each homer is also categorized into one of three types: Just Enough (JE) for homers that cleared the fence by ten feet or less, Plenty (PL) for those that were sure home runs but not “blasts,” and No Doubt (ND) for true “blasts”—homers that cleared the fence by at least 20 feet and landed at least 50 feet beyond the fence.Hitter Team Pitcher Team True Stnd. # Type John Baker FLA Chan Ho Park LAD 375 367 1 PL Casey Blake CLE Gary Glover TB 416 403 9 PL Emil Brown OAK Cesar Jimenez SEA 348 347 7 JE Marlon Byrd TEX John Lackey LAA 421 410 4 PL Shin-Soo Choo CLE Andy Sonnanstine TB 370 360 3 PL Jack Cust OAK Brandon Morrow SEA 366 366 17 PL David Dellucci CLE Andy Sonnanstine TB 400 388 8 PL Adam Dunn CIN Jon Lieber CHC 485 469 24 ND Jermaine Dye CWS Zack Greinke KC 464 440 20 ND Edwin Encarnacion CIN Ted Lilly CHC 365 332 14 PL/L Mike Fontenot CHC Bronson Arroyo CIN 384 358 7 PL/L Ben Francisco CLE Andy Sonnanstine TB 385 377 8 PL Jonny Gomes TB Aaron Laffey CLE 415 413 7 ND Ken Griffey CIN Michael Wuertz CHC 420 388 12 PL/L Josh Hamilton TEX John Lackey LAA 445 431 21 PL J.J.
