Game of the Day
Two young studs engaged in a PETCO pitching duel, as Chris Young outdueled Matt Cain and the Padres beat the Giants 1-0. Cain pitched hitless ball for the first six innings, but yielded his only hit and run allowed (on a sacrifice fly) in the seventh.
Young pitched seven strong innings, and Cla Meredith and Trevor Hoffman finished the job for the Padres. The Padres’ bullpen hasn’t allowed a run yet this season.

Player News
Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldThe Twins are planning to place both Rondell White (calf) and Jeff Cirillo (knee) on the disabled list and call up Josh Rabe and Alexi Casilla. That's not much for help for the game's second worst bench (behind Baltimore's, of course). Jason Tyner will benefit most from White's absence. Jason Kubel will also see more time in left field, perhaps opening up some DH at-bats for Rabe.
Rafael Furcal (ankle) will begin a two-game rehab assignment at Single-A Inland Empire on Tuesday and rejoin the Dodgers on Friday. A bit of a disppointment, as it appeared he could play Wednesday. However, since the Dodgers have Thursday off, he'll have to wait a little longer. Furcal will DH tomorrow and play shortstop on Wednesday.
The Padres are set to sign Chris Young to a contract extension through 2010 with an option for 2011. The option would be for his first year of free agency. Young is currently on the third-year of a three-year contract he signed when the Rangers were afraid he'd jump to the NBA.
The Dodgers are calling Jason Schmidt day-to-day with right hamstring tightness. Schmidt was already feeling better before the end of the game, so there's a pretty good chance he'll make his next start. He allowed four runs -- three earned -- in four innings and homered before leaving Monday's game.
Chris Carpenter will be placed on the disabled list because of moderate arthritis and a mild impingement in his pitching elbow. Carpenter had an MRI scan and exam today by team physician Dr. George Paletta in St. Louis. "Chris will be placed on the disabled list (retroactive to April 2)," the Cardinals said in a statement, "and will rest and be re-evaluated in the next 10-14 days." An arthritic elbow hardly seems like a good condition for a pitcher, but the team is pleased Carpenter doesn't have any ligament damage. Maybe he'll be back sometime around the end of the month. Randy Keisler will be called up to start in his place on Tuesday.
Mike Hampton has a torn flexor tendon in his elbow that will require surgery, knocking him out for the season. Hampton will need 6-9 months to recover from surgery, so he should be ready for next year. This means either Lance Cormier or Kyle Davies is now going to have a permanent rotation spot. Odds are the Braves will need considerable innings from both to get through the season.
The Astros have decided to pull Brad Lidge from the closer's role and use him earlier in games. Dan Wheeler is the new favorite for saves in Houston. "I'm going to change the bullpen configuration a little bit," manager Phil Garner said. "Brad is not going to close as a general rule. ... As of right now I'm going to pitch him earlier in the game, sixth inning area, sixth-seventh inning area 'cause I want to pitch him more often, give him more consistent work. As it stands right now I'll probably close with Wheeler, set up with [Chad] Qualls and [Rick] White." It had to be done. Lidge's fastball is still there, so he could turn things around if he gets his head on straight. In the meantime, Wheeler will likely do a fine job saving games.
The Angels' three-game series in Cleveland beginning Tuesday has been moved to Miller Park in Milwaukee. The Angels and Indians were unable to switch home series, but the games will get played anyway, as the Indians will begin their home schedule on the road in Milwaukee. They'll then return to Cleveland for a weekend series against the White Sox.

Adam Everett hit a two-run homer off Bob Howry in the eighth inning to lead the Houston Astros over Chicago 5-3 Monday. Everett hit just six homers last season but now has 34 for his career -- the most by a shortstop in Astros history. "It's a nice honor," Everett said. "Hopefully I can make the margin a little greater. But any time you're the leader in anything in club history it's pretty amazing."
Alex Rodriguez homered for the third straight game in the Yankees' 8-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Rodriguez became the first player in team history to hit five homers in the first six games.
The Florida Marlins, who began the week leading the majors in runs, scored two in the first inning on Monday against Milwaukee and took a 4-1 lead in the third on Miguel Cabrera's two-run homer, which increased his RBI total to 11. He began the week leading the NL in hitting and went 1-for-2 to remain at .500 with a slugging percentage of 1.042. Cabrera said he's benefiting from the productivity of the rest of the order. The Marlins are batting .311. "I feel good," he said. "I'm seeing good pitches to hit."
Ian Snell (0-1) limited St. Louis to one run over seven innings. But that was one run too many as Braden Looper held the Pirates to two hits over seven innings in only his second start in 574 career appearances.
Braden Looper (1-1) held the Pirates to two hits over seven innings in only his second start in 574 career appearances. He experienced a few rough moments, walking three, hitting a batter and committing a balk, but the right-hander tightened up with runners on base -- exactly the kind of start manager Tony La Russa wanted. "I'd be lying if I said it was normal," Looper said of winning as a starter. "It's a good feeling to be sitting on the bench after throwing seven innings."
A.J. Burnett (1-1) allowed just three hits, struck out five and walked three in 6 2/3 innings on Monday against the Royals in a win. He lasted just two innings in his first start -- his shortest since June 30, 2004. Kansas City loaded the bases in the second and third but couldn't score. "It was a battle early, but when our guys come up and swinging like they did it lifts us up so much," Burnett said.
Hill was 3-for-3 with two doubles (3) and two RBI (6) in Monday's game against Kansas City, as he pushed his batting average to .348. He also picked up a walk in the victory.
Vernon Wells homered to lead Toronto to a 9-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the Blue Jays' home opener on Monday night. He finished 2-for-4 with the solo home run (2).
Padres rookie third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff left Monday night's game against San Francisco with a bruised left elbow. Kouzmanoff was hit by a pitch from Matt Cain with two outs in the fourth. He played another inning then was replaced by Russell Branyan in the top of the sixth.
Bobby Abreu went 3-for-5 with a home run (1) and four RBIs (6) in the Yankees' 8-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night. He also scored three runs in the victory.
Carl Pavano threw seven efficient innings in the Yankees' 8-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night. Striking out two without a walk over 79 pitches, Pavano (1-0) gave up six hits and two runs for his first victory since May 22, 2005. "Some days, it feels like yesterday. Sometimes, a lifetime," said Pavano. Before pitching last week on opening day, Pavano's previous appearance was on June 27, 2005.
Sidney Ponson (0-1) hadn't pitched since March 31, the last day of spring training. He gave up 10 hits and eight runs in 5 2/3 innings on Monday night against the Yankees in his first regular season start with the Twins. "I'm not a guy to make excuses," said Ponson, who gave up five runs with two outs. "I just didn't pitch good (Monday). That's what it comes down to."
Torii Hunter was 2-for-3 with his third double of the season and an RBI (3) in Monday's game against the Yankees. He also picked up his second stolen base.
Derek Jeter was 3-for-4 with two runs scored on Monday at Minnesota, batting second in manager Joe Torre's lineup behind Johnny Damon, who was back in the lineup after missing time due to a calf strain.
Johnny Damon (calf) had two hits on Monday at Minnesota in his first start in a week due to a calf strain. He was back atop manager Joe Torre's lineup and starting in center field.
Dan Uggla, who had two hits for the second game in a row, has rebounded from a 2-for-22 start to hike his average to .214. He also scored a pair of runs in Monday's game against the Brewers.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he gave the struggling Jorge Julio the night off on Monday against Milwaukee because the closer with the lucrative contract had pitched the previous two days. Julio will be back in the role Tuesday, Gonzalez said, despite a 16.88 ERA. The rest of the Marlins' young bullpen has an ERA of 2.18 -- one reason they're 5-2 with three wins in a row.
Jeff Francis allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings, as the Rockies beat Los Angeles 6-3 Monday to snap the Dodgers' four-game winning streak and spoil their home opener. He also gave up five hits and three walks while striking out six, as he improved to 1-0 after a no-decision in his first start of the season.
Garrett Atkins, who hit 29 homers and drove in 120 runs last season, hit a 1-0 pitch into the left field bullpen with two outs in the first inning on Monday at L.A. Dodgers to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead. He added two more RBI in the 6-3 road win.
Mark Hendrickson worked three scoreless innings of relief in Monday's game against the Rockies, as he came on early for an injured Jason Schmidt (hamstring). He allowed just one hit while striking out four in the tidy 43-pitch effort.
Right fielder Matt Kemp came out in the fourth inning of Monday's game against the Rockies with a sore right shoulder after banging into the auxiliary scoreboard trying to catch Baker's triple. X-rays on Kemp's shoulder were negative, and he said he doesn't believe he'll be out for more than a couple days. "At first I thought it was worse than what it was," Kemp said. "It hurt really bad when I was walking off the field. I thought I was done. But everything will be all right."
Daniel Cabrera (1-1) allowed two runs, seven hits and five strikeouts. He walked none -- a significant statistic given that he led the AL with 104 walks in 2006. He's 3-0 in five career starts against Detroit. "I'm excited because it's my first time throwing on opening day," said Cabrera, who termed the start the most important of his four-year career.
Melvin Mora was 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and an RBI (8) in Monday's game against the Tigers. He is the early season leader in runs batted in with the Orioles.
Wilfredo Ledezma allowed just one hit and an intentional walk in 2 1/3 innings of relief in Monday's game at Baltimore, as he did a great job coming on after the ineffective starter Chad Durbin.
Marlins.mlb.com reports Ricky Nolasco has been scratched for his scheduled start on Tuesday against the Brewers and he has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a tender right elbow. The nod now will go to 21-year-old right-hander Rick Vanden Hurk, a native of the Netherlands, who was recalled from Double-A Carolina. "After Friday, it wasn't right, so we decided to get it checked out," said Nolasco, who was 11-11 with a 4.82 ERA as a rookie in 2006. "[An MRI] came back negative. We'll play it safe. It's a long season."
Jason Schmidt (1-1), making his second start for the Dodgers after signing a three-year contract in December, left in the fifth with tightness in his right hamstring. Schmidt, who earlier hit his seventh career homer, walked off the field after a brief delay and was relieved by Mark Hendrickson. Schmidt allowed four runs -- three earned -- and seven hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Jason Isringhausen -- pitching in short sleeves on a cold day -- finished a combined three-hitter with a perfect ninth inning on Monday at Pittsburgh. He has converted both of his save opportunities. He struck out one batter in the outing.
Michael Barrett went 2-for-3 with a double and a two-out RBI against the Astros on Monday.
Cubs GM Jim Hendry said he's still confident the team will reach an agreement on a contract extension with RHP Carlos Zambrano, who got one of the loudest cheers during pregame introductions.
Craig Biggio, 41, had a pair of doubles and scored twice at the Cubs Monday as Houston won for just the second time in seven games.
Another snowed out doubleheader Monday pushes C.C. Sabathia back to Tuesday. He will be followed in the rotation by Jake Westbrook, Jeremy Sowers, Paul Byrd and Fausto Carmona, who is slotted as the No. 5 starter and is getting skipped on his first turn. Prospect Adam Miller, or Jason Davis out of the bullpen, won't be needed as a No. 6 starter now.
Tuesday will be Jeff Weaver's fourth attempt at a debut with the Mariners after his expected starts Saturday, Sunday and Monday were all thwarted by the weather. Felix Hernandez, Jarrod Washburn, Miguel Batista and Horacio Ramirez will follow in the rotation. The snow out means a No. 6 starter won't be needed this week. Ryan Feierabend, Cha Seung Baek and Brandon Morrow could have been candidates for a spot start.
C Vance Wilson might be out of action for a month or more if his sore right elbow continues to bother him. Wilson was in Kansas City with the Tigers on Sunday but was scheduled to pay Dr. James Andrews a visit in Birmingham, Ala., at midweek to further pin down the source of his pain.
David Wright extended his career-best hitting streak to 19 games, dating to last season, with a two-run double in the eighth.
Mets RHP Duaner Sanchez is scheduled to have surgery Tuesday to repair a hairline fracture in his pitching shoulder. He will have a screw inserted into his right shoulder. Sanchez hasn't pitched for New York since July, when he separated the same shoulder in a taxi accident and had surgery. He felt a pop in the shoulder last month while throwing in spring training.
P Craig Hansen got a save in one appearance for Triple-A Pawtucket. He pitched two innings and gave up one hit and a walk with four strikeouts.
Cole Hamels was solid Monday, but he got a no-decision against the Mets, striking out seven, allowing six hits and walking three through six innings.
DH Shea Hillenbrand has missed five games since aggravating his right groin muscle running the bases against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. Hillenbrand has been taking batting practice and ran some agility drills over the weekend.
LHP Taylor Tankersley is on track to join the team next weekend in Atlanta. Tankersley (left shoulder tendinitis) was eligible to return from the disabled list Saturday. But the Marlins plan to have him throw at least three more times with Class A Jupiter, starting Sunday and followed by back-to-back starts, possibly Monday and Tuesday. "From the very beginning, we've wanted to be real careful with him," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We want him for the rest of the season. We don't want to bring him up and then send him back down again because he hurt himself. ... He's a big part of our bullpen."
Ryan Howard, the NL MVP last year, hit his first home run of the season off Ambiorix Burgos to give the Phillies a 5-3 lead in the sixth Monday.
