Player news items are provided by RotoworldIf he throws a successful bullpen session Sunday, Kenny Rogers (elbow) will likely rejoin the rotation for Wednesday\xe2\x80\x99s game against Chicago.
If Rogers is unable to pitch, manager Jim Leyland indicated that Virgil Vasquez could start Wednesday instead. Vasquez is 0-1 with a 9.26 ERA in three spot starts. "It's improved to the point that I think I can go out there and compete. I'm happy with that," Rogers said.
Scott Rolen said a season-ending operation to clean up scar tissue in his left shoulder will be scheduled soon.
Rolen said the operation, awaiting the green light from GM Walt Jocketty, would sideline him 6-8 weeks. "Something has to be done, no question," Rolen said. "Until it's done, it's futile." Also futile: telling Tony La Russa not to give starts to Miguel Cairo with Rolen and Adam Kennedy out.
Paul Byrd dominated the White Sox Saturday, hurling a four-hit shutout to lead Cleveland to a 7-0 win.
Byrd's best pitch tonight was strike one, as it seemed that virtually every batter had to battle from behind. He had faced the minimum through 7 1/3 innings before walking A.J. Pierzynski. Byrd moved to 14-5 with the win, trimming his ERA to 4.19 with his fifth career shutout. He struck out three and walked two. Byrd is rolling, with wins in his last four starts and in seven of his last eight decisions.
Pedro Martinez (shoulder) will rejoin the rotation and start Monday against the Reds, manager Willie Randolph confirmed.
Mixed leaguers probably won't want Pedro active right away. Even NL-only leaguers in close battles in ERA and WHIP should probably sit him for at least his first start back. He's not a great bet for the rest of this year.
Juan Encarnacion will miss the rest of the season after suffering multiple fractures of his left eye socket when he was hit by a foul ball on Friday.
Encarnacion might also be having vision problems as a result of Aaron Miles' liner. "Encarnacion will miss the remainder of 2007 season due to his injury and his long-term prognosis is undetermined at this time," according to a statement released by the Cardinals. This would seem to lock Rick Ankiel in as the team's primary right fielder the rest of the way. Ryan Ludwick will also see more time versus lefties.
Newsday reports that Roger Clemens could miss his next start because of the blisters on his right foot and some elbow inflammation.
Manager Joe Torre said "right now" Clemens is still "on target" to pitch Monday, but that doesn't mean a lot. If Clemens needs a few extra days off, the Yankees will likely turn to Mike Mussina against the Mariners.
The A's announced that Eric Chavez, Travis Buck and Mark Kotsay will all sit out the rest of the season.
Chavez will undergo surgery on his troublesome shoulder next week. Injuries have turned the 29-year-old third baseman from one of the AL's best players to a serious question mark going forward. The A's owe him $35 million over the next three years, so they wouldn't get much of anything in return if they opted to shop him this winter. He'll likely be back as the regular third baseman next year. In the meantime, Jack Hannahan will continue to fill in.
