Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldDerek Jeter said he'd likely play Wednesday after leaving Tuesday's game with a left hand contusion.
"It'll be fine. Obviously, it doesn't feel good. But I should be all right by tomorrow," Jeter said. "He hit me pretty good. Fortunately, it's not broken."
Eric Gagne said he had stiffness in his right shoulder after coming out of Tuesday's game.
Since Guillermo Mota had an ugly outing in his last save chance, Salomon Torres would seem to be the clear choice as the fallback in Milwaukee if Gagne lands on the disabled list. The Brewers might benefit from having him sit out a couple of weeks.
Jeff Francoeur sat out the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader, ending his consecutive-game streak at 370.
The Braves had every opportunity to use Francoeur off the bench as a pinch-hitter or defensive replacement, but they opted to keep him on the bench. Delmon Young now has the longest active streak in baseball at 209 games.
Ryan Church suffered a head injury after colliding with Yunel Escobar's knee at the end of Tuesday's game.
Church was left with a big bump on his head as a result of trying to break up a double play. As long as he's not seriously hurt, we'd say he got exactly what he deserved for what was a stupid and dangerous slide. Escobar was also hurt and had to be helped off the field with what was probably a bruise.
Padres placed RHP Jake Peavy on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 15, with a strained right elbow.
"The ligament looks fine, so that's good," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Hopefully in two weeks, the edema of the joint will subside and the swelling will subside and he'll be able to resume throwing." Even if that's the case, he'd probably miss an additional couple of weeks. Wilfredo Ledezma apparently will fill the open rotation spot.
Yankees activated third baseman Alex Rodriguez from the 15-day disabled list.
A-Rod returns without a rehab assignment, though he did get plenty of at-bats in extended spring games over the weekend. He ended up missing three weeks after aggravating a right quad strain.
Mike Piazza announced his retirement from baseball on Tuesday.
Piazza hoped to play this year, but serious interest never materialized from a major league team. The future Hall of Famer ends his career with a .308/.377/.545 line, 427 homers and 1,335 RBI in 1,912 games over 16 seasons. He was named to 12 All-Star teams, he set the record for homers by a catcher and he twice led the NL in OPS+. His .362-40-124 season in 1997 was maybe the greatest offensive year ever for a catcher.
Pedro Martinez (hamstring) allowed one earned run on five hits in an extended spring training game on Monday.
Most importantly, he didn't feel any pain in an effort that saw him hit 90 on the radar gun. He'll throw a bullpen session with the team in Atlanta on Wednesday, and could return for the series against the Marlins that starts on Monday. Martinez also suggested that he could retire after this season to be with his father, who is suffering from an aggressive form of lymphoma.
An MRI revealed fluid and torn cartilage in Andrew Jones' right knee.
After Monday's game, Joe Torre said that Jones would be out until at least Friday due to the injury. Jones painted a more dire picture: "I'm going to give it two days, and if it doesn't get better... we'll go ahead and scope it," said Jones. Arthroscopic surgery would keep Jones out of the lineup until July, making "arthroscopic surgery" a potential MVP candidate for the Dodgers. "Hopefully, I can just get treatment on it, and then probably get (the surgery) done during the offseason," Jones said.

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
