Player News
Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldRyan Doumit (thumb) expects to be activated from the disabled list Thursday, the first day he's eligible.
"I really feel like I'll be ready to go then, based on how I feel and the way the doctor tells me the thumb is healing," Doumit said Friday. The Pirates originally reported Doumit would miss at least a month, so he's either being way too optimistic or this is excellent news.
Clint Barmes was diagnosed with a sprained right knee after Jose Reyes slid into him in the 10th inning on Friday.
A DL stint is a real possibility here. Omar Quintanilla would likely replace him as the Rockies' starting shortstop, though Juan Castro could be called up to split time.
Doug Davis, in his first major league start since having a cancerous thyroid gland removed, pitched seven innings of one-run ball and earned the win Friday.
The win was Davis' second. He let up only five hits and struck out four, while lowering his ERA to 2.70. He'll need to show that he can pitch this well consistently before we can recommend him to NL-only leaguers, but it is a fantastic story.
The Los Angeles Daily News says all indications are that Clayton Kershaw will be called up to start Sunday's game.
That would leave Brad Penny's start alone on Saturday, but result in both Hiroki Kuroda and Chad Billingsley getting pushed back one day. Kershaw is probably worth trying in all formats while he's up, but it's unlikely he'll be consistent at all, and while he will have a great strikeout rate, he's not going to pitch enough innings to really rack up huge K numbers.
Barry Zito earned his first win of the year Friday, allowing only one run and three hits over six-plus innings.
Zito is now 1-8. Nice. He has, however, pitched well in consecutive starts. He managed to strike out five, but threw only 59 of his 109 pitches for strikes, resulting in four walks. Zito takes a 5.65 ERA and a heightened ego into next week's start against the Diamondbacks.
Fausto Carmona left his start Friday because of what the Indians are calling a strained left hip.
Carmona, who was charged with six runs in three-plus innings, was injured while covering first base on a single. He's probably day-to-day, but if he lands on the DL, the Indians would turn to Jeremy Sowers until Jake Westbrook returns.
Chad Tracy (knee) will rejoin the Diamondbacks Monday.
"I'm very anxious to get there," Tracy said Friday. "That's my team, and that's where I want to be. It's tough to get up for games here." Tracy played in 10 games in the D-Backs' minor league system, hitting .225 through 40 at-bats. It's likely third string catcher Robby Hammock will be sent down to make room.
Brewers placed RHP Eric Gagne on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 21, with right rotator cuff tendinitis.
Salomon Torres is the likely choice to close while Gagne takes at least two weeks off. Guillermo Mota and Brian Shouse will work the eighth, at least until David Riske is activated.
John Smoltz will begin a rehabilitation assignment with Double-A Mississippi on Saturday.
As long as he's feeling OK, Smoltz probably won't make more than a couple of appearances in the minors before rejoining the Braves. He'll be the favorite for saves in the pen once activated.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
