Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldAn MRI on Freddy Sanchez's left knee Tuesday revealed a meniscus tear.
Sanchez will probably need to undergo some sort of procedure in the offseason. But for now, he'll try to play through. "We'll rehab him," said manager Bruce Bochy. "It's probably a few days if not more." The Giants may have just developed serious reservations about picking up the second baseman's $8.1 million option for 2010.
Alex Rodriguez homered and hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in a win over the Angels on Tuesday night, as the Yankees clinched a return to the playoffs.
The Yankees were actually guaranteed a playoff birth with the Rangers' loss to the Athletics earlier on Tuesday night. A-Rod made it a moot point with a ninth-inning sacrifice fly to put the Yankees ahead for good. Rodriguez also added his 27th home run -- a two-run shot -- in the third inning. He is batting .352 with four homers and 19 RBI this month.
Bobby Jenks will miss the rest of the season because of a strained calf muscle sustained Tuesday.
Octavio Dotel and Matt Thornton figure to share save opportunities during the final two weeks. Scott Linebrink isn't likely to factor into the mix since he's struggled of late. Jenks finishes the year with a 3.71 ERA and 29 saves in 35 attempts. The suspicion is that the White Sox will explore dealing him this winter.
Zack Greinke earned his 15th win with six innings of shutout ball against the Red Sox on Tuesday night.
Greinke boosted his Cy Young credentials by allowing just two hits while striking out five and walking three. Manager Trey Hillman pulled him after a very efficient 91 pitches, but he was probably just playing it safe after Greinke was struck in the elbow by a comebacker in his last start. Fortunately, five runs were enough to get him the victory. The Cy Young-hopeful leads the league in both ERA (2.08) and WHIP (1.06). He'll took to play spoiler in a quest for his 16th win against the Twins in his next outing.
Brandon Webb told the Arizona Republic Tuesday that he's not willing to take a paycut to remain with the Diamondbacks.
According to a report published last week on SI.com, the D'Backs were hoping to work out a compromise deal with Webb this fall in lieu of picking up his $8.5 million 2010 option. He's not interested. "If it comes down to that and they ask me to do something like that," said the right-hander. "I would have to - just for myself - see what else is out there and see if there's something better." It sounds like Arizona will have to pick up that option if they want to retain their ace.
Brett Myers has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain of his right latissimus muscle and won't pick up a baseball for another week.
The diagnosis came soon after an MRI Tuesday. Myers will throw a bullpen session next Tuesday and his fate for the rest of the season will be determined based on the results. It's possible he could miss the first round of the playoffs, and maybe more.
Aaron Cook (shoulder) is scheduled to return to the Rockies' starting rotation on Friday against the Cardinals.
Cook has been out for over a month with a strained right shoulder, but looked strong during a 50-pitch simulated game over the weekend. He was 10-6 with a 4.47 ERA before the injury. That said, he will be limited to a pitch count around 70 and the matchup against St. Louis isn't ideal.
Brett Myers underwent an MRI on his right shoulder on Tuesday in Philadelphia.
The team is still awaiting the results. Myers has been hampered by soreness in the back of his shoulder, and as a result, he hasn't appeared in a game since September 12. Myers has allowed three runs over 4 2/3 innings since returning from hip surgery in June.
Gary Sheffield plans to return next year for his 22nd major league season.
Sheffield will become a free agent this fall and, according to the New York Post, has his eye on five teams -- the Mets, Rangers, Astros, Rays and Marlins. He's batting .277/.369/.453 this season with 10 home runs and 43 RBI in 267 at-bats, and feels like he can produce at an even higher rate in 2010. "I like my chances," said the soon-to-be 41-year-old outfielder.
