Carlos Zambrano got into a shoving match with Michael Barrett and left the ballpark early after giving up seven runs -- six earned -- in five innings Friday against the Braves. Zambrano and Barrett argued in the dugout after a cross-up passed ball played a big role in a five-run fifth inning. Zambrano had been working with Henry Blanco lately, but with Blanco going on the DL, he and Barrett were teamed up today and Zambrano struggled, though that had a lot to do with some awful defense. Ryan Theriot lost an easy popup in the sun to lead to a run in the first, and another run scored in the fourth when Matt Murton had a shallow fly go off his glove. Those were the only two runs before the fifth. Had the Cubs played better behind him today, things could have turned out a lot differently for Zambrano. As is, he may be facing some discipline from the team over his actions.

MLB suspended designated hitter Gary Sheffield three games for his actions in Thursday's game. Sheffield threw a piece of his broken bat in the general direction of home plate umpire Greg Gibson after hitting a grounder. He immediately appealed the suspension, so he'll remain in the lineup for now. Once he's forced to serve the penalty, the Tigers will give his at-bats to Marcus Thames.

John Lackey became the first major leaguer to reach nine wins this season after throwing 7 1/3 innings of two-run ball against the Orioles on Friday. Lackey gave up five hits and two walks, with both runs coming on a Miguel Tejada homer in the first. Lackey departed with nobody on base and one out in the eighth, and then watched Scot Shields and Francisco Rodriguez combine to preserve the one-run lead. In addition to leading the majors in wins, Lackey is fifth in the big leagues in ERA.

Matt Capps is replacing Salomon Torres in the closer's role for the Pirates, effective immediately. Very surprising timing here. We thought this might happen in mid-April, when Torres blew three early save chances, but Torres had a 3.00 ERA to Capps' 5.40 mark during May. We still think it's the better arrangement, as Torres is more valuable being able to go two innings at a time, something that wasn't happening while he was locked in as the ninth-inning role. Capps should be picked up in all formats.

The Red Sox believe J.D. Drew (hamstring) is less likely than Mike Lowell (hand) to play again this weekend. "I saw him talking to the trainer, I knew there was a problem," said manager Terry Francona after the game. "Again, you get into an area where if somebody goes after a ball, runs down the line and pops their hamstring because I didn’t take them out, I’m going to have a hard time living with myself. So at this point he’s day-to-day and he’ll be evaluated more, that’s about all I really know right now." Wily Mo Pena and Eric Hinske will share time while Drew is out.

Mark Teixeira is questionable to play Saturday after suffering a concussion during Friday's game against the Mariners. Teixeira has played in 501 straight games. "If we decide to not start him, but if he feels like he can have an at-bat, then of course I'm going to give him an at-bat," manager Ron Washington said. "But his health is most important. We need him."

Scott Rolen isn't likely to play this weekend after suffering a strained right hamstring in Friday's game. "I think it's going to take a couple of days," manager Tony La Russa said. "He said he hurt it when he was running to first base." Scott Spiezio will play third base in his place.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Game of the Day
The AL Central leaders played a great game yesterday, with the Indians eventually beating the Tigers, 12-11. The Tigers led 5-1 in the sixth, but the Indians tied it, then the Tigers led 9-5 in the eighth, but the Indians closed to 9-7. When the Tigers took a 11-7 lead into the bottom of the ninth and Todd Jones got the first out, they had a win probability of 99%. But the Indians overwhelmed Jones and Detroit, scoring five runs in the ninth for the victory.

Big hits were a Victor Martinez three-run homer (his second home run of the game), Josh Barfield single to right and David Dellucci single to center. The Indians are 5-0 against the Tigers, who have lost seven of their last eight games.
