Player News
Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldCubs placed Carlos Zambrano on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 19 with a minor strain in his right shoulder.
It's the second career DL stint for Zambrano. He shouldn't be out too long. Big Z had a 8-3 record with a 3.13 ERA in 16 starts this season.
The Marlins plan to activate Josh Willingham from the disabled list on Tuesday.
Willingham will be eased back into the lineup. 'I'm not going to run him out there the first seven days in a row,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said. He has been on the DL since April 28 with lower back pain.
Chipper Jones said he expects to be sidelined through the weekend after aggravating his strained right quad.
"It's happened so many times I can't recall," Jones said. "This is definitely the worst, though." Omar Infante will start at either third or short on Saturday, depending on whether Yunel Escobar plays.
Erik Bedard was taken out of Friday's game against the Braves with back spasms.
Bedard threw three scoreless innings being unable to continue. With the trade talk already heating up, one wonders if he's really willing to give it his all for the Mariners at this point.
Gerald Laird left Friday's game in the fourth inning with a right leg injury.
The apparent hamstring injury seems likely to put him on the disabled list. That'd make Jarrod Saltalamacchia a strong play in mixed leagues. Taylor Teagarden or Max Ramirez could be called up to serve as a part-time player.
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Blue Jays will fire manager John Gibbons prior to Friday night's game and replace him with Cito Gaston.
There's a press conference scheduled shortly. Gibbons has gone 305-305 in parts of five seasons with the Blue Jays, including this year's disappointing 35-39 mark that has the team in the AL East basement. General manager J.P. Ricciardi may also be on the hot seat at some point, but unlike in Seattle this time the manager takes the first fall. Gaston managed the Blue Jays from 1989-1997 and led the team to a pair of championships, but hasn't managed since then, hasn't skippered a winning team since 1994 and is now 64 years old.
Curt Schilling told WEEI that he'll have surgery on his right shoulder on Monday, and that his season - and possibly career - is over.
The 41-year-old wasn't sure what type of surgery he'd be undergoing, and said that would be figured out on Monday. He left open the possibility that he'd be able to pitch again next season, but said "there's a decent chance that I have thrown my last pitch, forever." He had been rehabbing shoulder and biceps injuries, but hit a setback while throwing before last Friday's game.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
