Player news items are provided by RotoworldBarry Bonds homered off Scott Proctor and drew a bases-loaded walk in Friday's loss to the Yankees.
Bonds' 749th career homer was a solo shot that brought the Giants to within three runs. He needed to do it three innings earlier, when the Giants had Kei Igawa on the ropes, but Igawa wouldn't challenge him, and though Bonds fouled off the first potential ball four he received, he ended up walking, forcing in a run. Bengie Molina then flew out to the warning track against Luis Vizcaino to end the inning.
X-rays on Justin Morneau's chest showed no broken bones. He'll be kept in the hospital overnight because of a bruised lung.
Morneau, who was given an oxygen mask after spitting up blood, is not expected to play the rest of this series against Florida and will be re-evaluated Sunday by a Marlins team doctor. Maybe this injury, which appeared minor at first and then got scary in a hurry, won't send him to the DL after all. Still, the Twins might want to call up Garrett Jones to fill in at first base for a few days.
The Royals called off the Milton Bradley deal with the A's after learning that the outfielder suffered an oblique strain in his final game with the club on Tuesday.
The A's reportedly did not know of the injury when they designated Bradley for assignment on Thursday. "The A's were not at fault," Royals GM Dayton Moore said. Perhaps Bradley didn't want to play for the Royals so he made up the injury? If he becomes a free agent, he'll be able to choose his team, something he might find preferable. The Royals agreed to give up Leo Nunez and pay the remainder of Bradley's $4 million salary before the trade fell through.
Kenny Rogers shut out Atlanta on two hits over six innings Friday to win his 2007 debut, 5-0.
Rogers struck out five and walked none in a remarkable comeback for a 42-year-old hurler coming off surgery in spring training after a blood clot was discovered in his pitching shoulder. It certainly didn't look good for the Gambler when his first pitch of the night hit Kelly Johnson, but he settled down and retired the next 10 batters. Even though you might be able to shut down the Braves these days, this was still a very impressive performance. Go ahead and activate Rogers.
Carlos Zambrano was dominant Friday against the White Sox, allowing one run over eight innings and matching his career-high with 12 strikeouts.
Zambrano, who took a no-hitter into the eighth last time out, retired the first 10 batters he faced today, striking out seven of them. His shutout bid lasted until the seventh, when Paul Konerko homered. Zambrano, in the middle of the perhaps the best run any starter has had this season, has given up two earned runs and eight hits over 25 innings in his last three starts.
Orioles placed shortstop Miguel Tejada on the 15-day disabled list with a non-displaced fracture in his left wrist.
The fifth longest consecutive-game streak in major league history comes to an end at 1,152. We would have stopped counting it after yesterday anyway. Tejada will probably push to come back after the minimum, but we're guessing he'll be return in the first game following the All-Star break next month. The O's will go with Chris Gomez and Freddie Bynum at shortstop while he's out. Bynum is the better pickup of the two in AL-only leagues.
Dontrelle Willis played catch Friday and said his arm felt fine, but his start will be backed up at least two days.
Willis, who left his last start with forearm tightness, is now penciled in to pitch Tuesday. "I think they're just worried about me not getting a further injury," Willis said. "They don't want me to be out for a year." Byung-Hyun Kim will go Sunday.
