Player News
Player news items are provided by RotoworldJohan Santana set a franchise record by striking out a career-high 17 batters in eight shutout innings against the Rangers on Sunday.
Absolutely dominant. Santana gave up just two hits in the game, both coming off the bat of Sammy Sosa, while issuing no free passes. The left-hander was at 112 pitches following eight innings and could have gone for a 20-strikeout performance if he went back out for the ninth. However, manager Ron Gardenhire decided to hold him back and went to Joe Nathan to protect a one-run lead. The 17 strikeouts was the highest mark in the majors since Ben Sheets struck out 18 batters in a game during 2004.
Carlos Beltran smacked two homers to drive in four runs against the Nationals on Sunday.
Beltran hit a solo shot off starter Shawn Hill in the sixth, then added a two-run blast off reliever Chris Schroder in the ninth. The center fielder also added a sacrifice fly and a walk while scoring three times. The oblique injury that cost Beltran two weeks during late July and early August seems to be a past concern, as the switch-hitter has five homers and 13 RBI in nine games since returning.

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
