The Padres decided Sunday that Chris Young (shoulder) will not return to the major leagues this season.
"We want Chris to take as much time as he needs, and get him right in 2010," said GM Kevin Towers. Young, who hit the disabled list June 17 with shoulder inflammation, has taken on a leadership role in the clubhouse, mentoring promising youngster Mat Latos.

Lance Berkman ran in the pool and worked out his strained left calf Sunday with an eye on returning early this week.
Berkman is expected to take grounders on the field Monday and may even try running at full speed. He's been sidelined since July 21 with a left calf strain and is aiming for a Tuesday or Wednesday return.

Derek Holland hurled a complete game shutout against the Angels on Sunday.
And that's why the Rangers refused to part with him in a Roy Halladay deal. Holland struck out eight, walked one, and gave up just three hits. Holland's 5.01 ERA on the season is hardly special, but he's been uterrly dominant in two of his last three starts and age, strikeout rate, and stuff are on his side for the future. Those in keeper leagues may want to take one last shot at buying him on the cheap.

Wandy Rodriguez returned from a hamstring injury to hurl seven shutout innings in a win over the Brewers on Sunday.
The injury didn't prevent Rodriguez from missing a start, and he looked strong while giving up just five hits, two walks, and a hit batter while striking out three. The outing lowered Rodriguez's ERA to 2.51, putting him in fourth place in the National League.

The Brewers have reportedly acquired David Weathers from the Reds for a player to be named.
The Reds got Scott Rolen to help them compete next year, but they apparently intend to do it without a bullpen. Weathers had a 3.32 ERA in 38 innings as the setup man for Francisco Cordero this season. The Reds could have kept him for next year at $3.7 million or let him go for $400,000.

Aaron Cook will miss his start Tuesday with what he thinks is a case of turf toe.
The plan is for him to start Saturday, but he'll see a specialist first. Josh Fogg is likely to start in his place Tuesday, but if he's needed in relief first, then the Rockies could go to Jhoulys Chacin instead.

Joe Crede is close to returning after receiving a cortisone shot in his right shoulder Friday.
Crede should be ready to do baseball activities Tuesday and return to the lineup Wednesday. Crede is hitting just .214 since the All-Star break, so hopefully the shot will get him turned around.

Standings

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
