Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldMatt Holliday went 3-for-5 with his third career grand slam and a solo homer as the Rockies overcame a 13-5 deficit to beat the Marlins 18-17 on Friday.
Crazy. The Rockies scored in every inning until the eighth. Things had calmed down with three straight scoreless half-innings until the Rockies came back with two in the bottom of the ninth. There were four singles and a botched double-play ball that resulted in no outs in the final frame. The Rockies also got two homers from Ryan Spilborghs and one apiece from Chris Iannetta and Garrett Atkins. Spilborghs, Clint Barmes, Holliday and Atkins combined to go 16-for-22 with five homers, 13 RBI and 13 RBI as the top four hitters in Colorado's lineup.
Michael Barrett will miss at least six weeks after suffering multiple facial fractures Wednesday night.
"The early word is he'll have to have some plates and screws in the area," said manager Bud Black. Barrett will have surgery in a week or two, once all of the swelling has subsided.
Johnny Damon expects to miss at least a couple of games after injuring his left shoulder on Saturday.
"I'm not sure how long these type of injuries last," Damon said. "It definitely doesn't feel good. I can't move it too well." The Yankees will probably call up Justin Christian to help out while Damon is out. Unless Damon needs to go on the DL, a pitcher (probably Billy Traber) would be sent down. Brett Gardner will start in left field until Damon returns.
The Dodgers are currently making runs at both C.C. Sabathia and the Pirates' Jack Wilson, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.
Complicating their efforts for Sabathia is that one or two players the Indians want are also being discussed in the Wilson deal. Rosenthal hints that 3B Andy LaRoche, RHP James McDonald and SS Chin-Lung Hu are "likely drawing consideration" from Cleveland, though he offers nothing to back that up.
Rockies placed first baseman Todd Helton on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 3, with a sore back.
"He feels probably more discomfort today than yesterday," manager Clint Hurdle said. "We feel we're best served by shutting this thing down for a while and give him a chance to heal rather than pushing his way through this one. I don't think he's capable of pushing his way through this one." The Rockies would probably feel differently if he happened to be hitting .320. As is, giving him a couple of weeks off probably is the best move. Jeff Baker will likely play over Joe Koshansky at first base, opening up second base for Clint Barmes.
Dodgers activated outfielder Andruw Jones from the disabled list.
Jones missed about six weeks of action with a knee injury that required surgery and returns after going 4-for-8 in three minor league rehab games. He'll resume starting in center field, with Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier flanking him in the corners. Jones hit just .165 in 43 games prior to landing on the DL, so don't expect much.
Indians designated RHP Joe Borowski for assignment.
It says a lot about how overdue the move was that Borowski goes from closing games to off the roster completely, but the Indians stuck with him in the ninth inning for 1 1/2 seasons despite a 5.57 ERA in 82 1/3 frames, including a hideous 7.56 mark this year. Based on performance alone he should struggle to find another big league job initially, but given that he's a "proven closer" you never know. Masa Kobayashi now looks like the favorite for saves, although manager Eric Wedge has yet to officially name a replacement closer and both Rafael Perez and Rafael Betancourt could also be in the mix.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution confirms previous reports that Jeff Francoeur will be sent to Double-A Mississippi.
The team apparently wants him to work with Mississippi manager Phillip Wellman, who has tutored Francoeur in the past. Francoeur's agent says that he'll be flying to Mississippi on Friday afternoon and could be in the Double-A lineup as soon as tonight. Jason Perry is expected to be called up to replace him, but the Braves are making a big defensive downgrade in hopes that a minor league stint will bust Francoeur out of his slump.
Sources told FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal that the Brewers are offering Matt LaPorta in a proposed deal for C.C. Sabathia.
Or at least that's what the Indians are telling other suitors in order to drive up the price. If it's true, then Milwaukee shouldn't need to add much more to the pot. Rosenthal says that shortstop Alcides Escobar could also be involved, but it's hard to imagine that happening unless the Indians sent additional talent Milwaukee's way (Rafael Betancourt? Masa Kobayashi?).
