Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldPedro Martinez (hamstring) allowed one earned run on five hits in an extended spring training game on Monday.
Most importantly, he didn't feel any pain in an effort that saw him hit 90 on the radar gun. He'll throw a bullpen session with the team in Atlanta on Wednesday, and could return for the series against the Marlins that starts on Monday. Martinez also suggested that he could retire after this season to be with his father, who is suffering from an aggressive form of lymphoma.
An MRI revealed fluid and torn cartilage in Andrew Jones' right knee.
After Monday's game, Joe Torre said that Jones would be out until at least Friday due to the injury. Jones painted a more dire picture: "I'm going to give it two days, and if it doesn't get better... we'll go ahead and scope it," said Jones. Arthroscopic surgery would keep Jones out of the lineup until July, making "arthroscopic surgery" a potential MVP candidate for the Dodgers. "Hopefully, I can just get treatment on it, and then probably get (the surgery) done during the offseason," Jones said.
The Astros announced that Roy Oswalt (hip) will make his scheduled start on Thursday against the Phillies.
Oswalt threw 25-30 pitches off flat ground Monday and was examined by team doctors before the team made the announcement. "I didn't throw hard or nothing," Oswalt said. "I'll see how I feel [Tuesday]. I'm going to try to throw [Tuesday] some and go from there. It's not a muscle so that's a good thing. I think it's just inflamed more than anything."
Jake Peavy will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his pitching elbow.
It's just the second time that Peavy's had to go on the DL since reaching the majors. The good news is that an MRI revealed no ligament or structural damage, but Peavy will be shut down for two weeks, and the San Diego Union Tribune estimates that he could be out for as long as six weeks. Peavy wasn't so sure: "I'm hoping, best-case scenario, maybe miss a few starts then try to get back out there," he said. Wilfredo Ledezma started in Peavy's place on Monday night.
Jon Lester pitched a no-hitter Monday night as the Red Sox beat the Royals 7-0.
Lester was allowed to begin the ninth at 113 pitches and stay in after issuing his second walk of the night to begin the inning. He ended up throwing 130 pitches, which is about 20 more than the Red Sox would have liked. Still, there was no taking him out of this one. Lester struck out nine. The only near hit came in the fourth, but Jacoby Ellsbury made an outstanding diving catch in center field. Lester improved to 3-2 with a 3.41 ERA. He was at 5.40 after six outings, but he's allowed just six earned runs in five starts since.
Marlins signed outfielder Jacque Jones to a minor league contract.
Jones hasn't played for over two weeks, so he'll head to extended spring training to get back in game shape. When he rejoins the Marlins, he'll likely end up starting against righties as part of a center field platoon with Cody Ross, giving him value in NL-only leagues. Alfredo Amezega is expected to be shifted back to a utility infielder role, with Robert Andino likely to get sent down when Jones returns.
