Brad Penny will undergo an MRI after complaining of more shoulder soreness following his loss to the Tigers on Saturday.
It's no secret that Penny's shoulder has been a problem off and on all year. Apparently, it was worse than ever today. "In the bullpen today, I knew I probably shouldn't have went out there," Penny said. "But that would have put the team in a horrible position (short bullpen)." They were put in a horrible position anyway after Penny gave up seven runs. No one's going to question his toughness, but it might have been best for both the player and the team if he went on the DL a month ago. Eric Stults could be called up to replace him in the rotation if he goes on the DL. Moving Hong-Chih Kuo or Chan Ho Park from the bullpen is another possibility.

The Padres will call up Chase Headley in time for Sunday's game against the Indians.
It's odd timing, considering that the Padres are playing pretty well, and if they were going to do it, it would have made more sense to make the move Friday, when they first had the DH available. Headley should take over as the Padres' primary left fielder, costing Scott Hairston and Jody Gerut some at-bats. Either Justin Huber or Paul McAnulty likely will be designated for assignment.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
