Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldJeff Keppinger was diagnosed with a fractured left kneecap after fouling a pitch off himself in Tuesday's game. An MRI is scheduled for Wednesday, but Keppinger is surely DL bound. The Reds will probably call up Paul Janish to share time with Jerry Hairston Jr. at shortstop until Alex Gonzalez gets back. Janish could have a little short-term fantasy value, but Hairston will be the better bet in NL-only leagues.
Japanese hurler Kenshin Kawakami, who is set to become a free agent after the season, reportedly wants to pitch for the Red Sox. The Yankees and Mets are among the teams believed to have scouted Kawakami, a soon-to-be 33-year-old right-hander. Kawakami just missed qualifying for free agency last year. Had he made the jump then, he might have received a contract similar to Hiroki Kuroda's. He has the weaker fastball of the two, but he has an outstanding track record.
Ryan Doumit was found to have a small fracture near the tip of his left thumb and likely will go on the DL. Manager John Russell said Doumit could miss anywhere from 10 days to three weeks, but he's obviously not going to stay on the roster even if the Pirates think it'll be just 10 days. Either Raul Chavez or Michel Hernandez will be called up to play behind Ronny Paulino.
Thrust back into the closer's role, Eric Gagne pitched a scoreless ninth for his 10th save on Tuesday. Gagne allowed a leadoff single to Russell Martin, bounced back to retire Blake DeWitt and Mark Sweeney and then surrendered a walk to Andruw Jones, causing the Brewers to get Brian Shouse up in the pen. Fortunately, that brought up Juan Pierre, and Pierre did what Pierre does best, popping up the very first pitch he saw to shortstop to end the game. Gagne threw 23 pitches tonight on the heels of working two innings on Monday, so we doubt he'll be available to close on Wednesday. However, it figures that the Brewers will keep giving him save chances until he implodes again.
X-rays were negative, so J.D. Drew is listed as day-to-day with a sprained left wrist. With Brendan Moss and Bobby Kielty sidelined, the Red Sox would probably call up Jonathan Van Every if they needed an extra outfielder. However, it sounds like Drew will avoid the disabled list. He should consider himself quite lucky, as his injury came on a play remarkably similar to the one that led to a break for Hideki Matsui a couple of years ago.
The U.S. Attorney's office filed a new indictment against Barry Bonds, charging him with 14 counts of lying to a grand jury and one count of obstruction when he denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs. Bonds originally was charged with four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice last Nov. 15, but U.S. District Judge Susan Illston ordered prosecutors on Feb. 29 to rework the indictment so that each charge alleged only one lie rather than lumping several alleged falsehoods into single counts.

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Game of the Day
The Tampa Bay Rays took sole possession of first place in the American League East with an extra-inning 2-1 victory over the Yankees. Edwin Jackson outpitched Chien-Ming Wang over the first seven innings and the Rays led, 1-0, in the top of the ninth. But Hideki Matsui tied the game with a solo blast off Troy Percival, and the game remained tied until the 11th inning, when Gabe Gross drove in Jonny Gomes to win it for the division-leading Rays.Rays 2, Yankees 1 - FINAL
