Player News
Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldMLB.com reports that Tim Wakefield (shoulder) will come off the disabled list to start Tuesday against the Yankees in Josh Beckett's place.
Tingling in his hand and inflammation in his elbow combined to scratch Beckett from the start, but the Red Sox are still hoping that he can avoid the disabled list. Wakefield threw a bullpen session Saturday and deemed himself ready to return after being sidelined since August 7 with tightness behind his right shoulder.
Yankees activated RHP Carl Pavano from the 60-day disabled list.
Seriously. Pavano's start Saturday night will be his first since last April and third in the past 38 months. The Yankees picked him to make the start over Phil Hughes after Pavano went 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA and 19/4 K/BB ratio in five starts while rehabbing in the minors. It's possible that he could stay healthy and effective enough to emerge with some fantasy value down the stretch, but the over/under on pitches thrown before another trip to the DL is probably somewhere around 25.
Royals placed third baseman Alex Gordon on the 15-day disabled list with a torn right quadriceps muscle.
Gordon suffered the injury Thursday and while there's no official timetable yet for his return, he seems unlikely to play again this season. With Gordon out Mark Teahen started at third base Friday for the first time since 2006, opening up an outfield spot for Joey Gathright.
Blue Jays optioned RHP Shaun Marcum to Triple-A Syracuse.
The notion of Marcum being demoted back to the minors would have seemed absurd in mid-June, when he had a 2.65 ERA and 86/27 K/BB ratio in 98 2/3 innings spread over 15 starts. However, an elbow injury sidelined him for a month and he's posted a 6.19 ERA and 23/16 K/BB ratio in seven starts since returning from the disabled list. General manager J.P. Ricciardi indicated Saturday that the move is temporary, saying that the Blue Jays plan to "give him a couple starts down in Triple-A just to see if he can get his mechanics back together." Count on Marcum being back in September, but until then journeyman John Parrish will fill his spot in the rotation.

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
