Player News
Player news items are provided by RotoworldThe A's announced that Eric Chavez, Travis Buck and Mark Kotsay will all sit out the rest of the season.
Chavez will undergo surgery on his troublesome shoulder next week. Injuries have turned the 29-year-old third baseman from one of the AL's best players to a serious question mark going forward. The A's owe him $35 million over the next three years, so they wouldn't get much of anything in return if they opted to shop him this winter. He'll likely be back as the regular third baseman next year. In the meantime, Jack Hannahan will continue to fill in.
Cardinals placed third baseman Scott Rolen on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 29, with a sore left shoulder.
One day prior to Sept. 1? If the Cardinals expected anything from Rolen in September, we're guessing they would have sent down a reliever to make room for the newly acquired Russell Branyan. This definitely knocks him out for the first two weeks of the month, and it sure seems like a sign that he's leaning towards having surgery soon.
According to Newsday, Pedro Martinez was impressive enough in his bullpen session Friday that he's likely to start Monday against the Mets.
It doesn't hurt Pedro's case that Orlando Hernandez is probably going to miss his start Tuesday. The plan was for Martinez to make one more rehab start and return next weekend.
Cole Hamels won't start Sunday as planned after experiencing elbow soreness during a bullpen session Thursday.
The Phillies are still trying to pass this off as a minor issue. "There's nothing structurally wrong; the ligament's attached," assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "We have no reason to believe this to be anything long term." Except for the fact that he's a 23-year-old pitcher with a history of serious arm issues. Hamels described the discomfort as minimal. He's to be shut down for another six days, so even in a best-case scenario, he'll make just three or four starts next month. Adam Eaton will pitch Sunday in his place.\r\n

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
