Braves placed SS Edgar Renteria on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ankle.
Renteria left Thursday's game in the eighth inning, with Chipper Jones sliding over to shortstop, but the Braves will go with Yunel Escobar as his full-time replacement. Losing Renteria now is a huge blow to the Braves' playoff chances, as he was hitting .336 with an .879 OPS in 105 games.

A's placed 3B Eric Chavez on the disabled list retroactive to July 27 with back spasms.
Finally. Chavez has missed seven straight games and 16 of 19, but as usual the A's waited as long as possible to put him on the DL. He figures to return when eligible, but don't count on a healthy Chavez down the stretch.

Carlos Zambrano left Friday's game in the sixth inning due to leg cramps.
Zambrano had a similar problem in his last outing. He took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but issued seven walks and was at 93 pitches when he left. He failed in his bid to become baseball's first 15-game winner, finishing with one run allowed on two hits in five-plus innings. Zambrano said afterward that he doesn't expect to miss his next start.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
