Ryan out - Twins general manager Terry Ryan is reportedly stepping down from his position today. No word on why, but he will remain in the Twins organization.

Slim pickings - Dave Cameron examines the wisdom of dropping big bucks on a free agent starting pitcher this offseason.

If a tree falls... - The Marlins are apparently drawing crowds in the hundreds these days, which is absolutely shocking for a major professional sports franchise.

Lottery ticket - The bidding on Bonds' record-breaking home run ball is up to almost $300,000. A couple months ago, I confidently predicted that the Bonds ball would be worth "a couple hundred grand, max," based on my recollection of previous record-breaking home run balls. Well, I was wrong.

Rich veins of data - More and more work is being done with the new pitch data available through MLB's new Gameday system. This piece tests out an algorithm for determining pitch type based on speed and movement data. (Hat tip to Tangotiger over at The Book Blog.)

More - Friend of THT Dan Fox points us to even more cool stuff being done with pitch data.

Derek Lowe was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday night because of a bruised pitching hand. The Dodgers will start Chad Billingsley tonight and then David Wells on Thursday, both on regular rest of Monday's off day. If Lowe, who was hurt prior to Tuesday's game, isn't ready to pitch Friday, the Dodgers could go to Eric Stults.

Troy Glaus is scheduled to undergo surgery on his foot and will miss the rest of the year. Glaus has been battling plantar fasciitis in his left foot since the first week of the season. He'll undergo a nerve decompression operation on Monday that the Jays hope will alleviate the soreness. Hector Luna, Russ Adams and Ray Olmedo will fill in for him the rest of the way. It's unlikely that any will have much fantasy value.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
