Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldMets placed RHP John Maine on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 29, with a strained right rotator cuff.
This is the right move for the Mets. Giving Maine a full two weeks off to deal with his minor shoulder issue makes a lot more sense than trying to rush him back. The team could call up Claudio Vargas to start Friday.
Billy Wagner said he has a strained left forearm and is scheduled for an MRI.
Wagner said he originally felt some soreness on Tuesday, and he blew the save Saturday against the Astros. He's typically pitched through these kind of problems, but with his shoulder also giving him issues on and off, it might be time for him to spend a couple of weeks on the DL. The Mets would likely go to a closer-by-committee if it happens. Neither Aaron Heilman nor Duaner Sanchez is throwing well enough to be penciled into the role.
Manny Ramirez said Saturday that he's open to finishing his career with the Dodgers.
"I want to stay here," Ramriez said. "At the end of the season, we'll find out if the Dodgers want me to finish my career here. We're going to sit down and talk about the situation." Manny has adapted quickly to his new digs, blasting his first home run as a Dodger last night, but he won't be giving them any kind of discount once the offseason hits.
After still feeling soreness while playing catch Saturday, Tim Hudson said he's decided to undergo Tommy John surgery.
"All of the arrows are pointing that way," Hudson said. "I just wanted to test it one more time to convince myself that's what needs to get done." If Hudson has it right away, then perhaps he'll be back for the final two months of 2009. The Braves will have a tough call on him after next season, as they have a $12 million option for 2010 with a $1 million buyout. It will probably prove to be too much of a gamble for the franchise unless he comes back very strong at the end of next year.
Royals placed second baseman Mark Grudzielanek on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle.
This should have been Alberto Callaspo's big break, but he's an idiot. The Royals likely will play Esteban German and Mike Aviles at second base, with Tony Pena Jr. starting at shortstop when Aviles moves over. German is the better short-term pickup than Pena in AL-only leagues.
Chris Duncan will undergo surgery on his herniated cervical disk on Monday, ending his season.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that "according to a specialist familiar with disk cases, such a condition 'has to be' considered career threatening." He'll have a prosthetic disk put in his back, and the recovery time is 3-6 weeks, but the team is more concerned about his long-term future and won't have him play again this season. He's reportedly been dealing with the back pain all season, which helps explain his struggles.
