Player News
Player news items are provided by RotoworldAccording to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the White Sox and Jermaine Dye have agreed to a two-year, $22 million extension with a mutual option for 2010.
Brandon Webb extended his scoreless streak to 42 innings by throwing a complete game shutout against the Braves on Friday.
Webb gave up just three baserunners while striking out six. He's just the 21st pitcher ever to go even 40 straight innings without allowing a run. Webb still has at least two starts to go before matching Orel Hershiser's record of 59 set back in 1988, but no player besides Webb has come closer in the 18 seasons since. He'll try and extend the streak when the Diamondbacks face the Brewers next week.
Chris Ray underwent Tommy John surgery on Thursday and is likely to miss all of 2008.
The Orioles didn't even reveal that he was set to see Dr. James Andrews. It turned out that he was scheduled for surgery to remove a bone spur, but a damaged UCL was found and it was determined that Tommy John surgery was the proper course. This doesn't come as a big surprise, given that it was revealed he had a ligament sprain in late July. It's unlikely the Orioles will try to rush him back in the second half of next year, though since he is a reliever, it's possible that he could return then. Danys Baez will spend the rest of this year auditioning for the closer's role in 2008. The Orioles could look to sign a stopgap this winter if Baez continues to disappoint.
Cubs signed RHP Carlos Zambrano to a five-year, $91.5 million contract extension with a vesting option for 2013.
Zambrano probably would have received at least $140 million over seven years had he gone to the high bidder as a free agent. Instead, he takes a deal that the MLBPA can't be very happy about. At least he gets a slightly higher annual salary than Barry Zito ($18.3 million to $18 million). The deal includes a full no-trade clause, and the vesting option is expected to turn into a player option as long he hits certain milestones over the course of the deal.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
