Player News
Player news items are provided by RotoworldJay Gibbons will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder on Tuesday.
Gibbons, who thinks he injured the shoulder making a diving catch in May, will continue to play through the weekend before being put on the disabled list and missing the remainder of the season. His decision to undergo surgery now means Jay Payton and Aubrey Huff won't have to worry about losing any at-bats the rest of the way. Should the Orioles lose another player to injury, they could give J.R. House or another minor leaguer an extended look at DH.
Carlos Beltran had a homer that scored all three Mets runs Friday in his return from the disabled list.
Beltran decided to come back and play even though he's not 100 percent, and for one night at least, it looks like he made the right choice. He usually struggles mightily while trying to gut it out through injuries, so we'll have to wait and see whether this was an aberration or not.
Travis Hafner underwent an MRI Friday that revealed left knee inflammation and a mild hamstring strain.
While they badly need the slugger for the series against the Yankees, the Indians aren't optimistic that Hafner will play at all this weekend. Jason Michaels is filling in for him tonight, with Trot Nixon shifting to DH.
Roger Clemens declined to appeal his five-game suspension and will begin to serve the penalty with Friday's game.
Very odd. If the suspension started Wednesday instead, then it'd make sense not to appeal it, as the Yankees had the off day Thursday. However, now the team has five games in five days, meaning that an extra starter will be needed, as there's no way the club will bring back Phil Hughes on three days' rest. Jeff Karstens could be the choice. That Clemens declined to appeal suggests that he might be battling a minor injury of some sort.
The Cubs put in a waiver claim on Scott Podsednik and could be attempting to work out a trade for the left fielder.
If acquired, Podsednik would probably become the Cubs' primary left fielder and leadoff man until Alfonso Soriano returns. He'd figure to have a diminished role and value if Soriano could return in September. The White Sox could call up Ryan Sweeney to take over in left field, though perhaps not until he proves he's over a sore wrist.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
