Race relations - A recent study linked by J.C. Bradbury over at Sabernomics finds that MLB umpires are (slightly) biased toward white pitchers.
Closing time - With the deadline to sign draft picks rapidly approaching, the Orioles are having trouble reaching an agreement with Boras client and Georgia Tech catcher Mike Wieters, who was the fifth overall pick. Meanwhile, the Mariners are also having right hander Phillipe Aumont, the 11th overall pick. Keep track of all the action over at Baseball Think Factory's draft signings thread.
Closer's mentality - Eric Gagne is having trouble adjusting to being a setup man. While I agree that the closer's role is different, if you can't excited about pitching in important eighth inning situations like Sunday's against the Orioles (two-run lead, runner on), then something is wrong with you.
Delayed return - The A's will finally attempt to get some value out of the infamous Tim Hudson trade, as can't-miss pitching prospect Dan Meyer, now 26, is finally called up to the majors.
Maturing Bonds - Barry Bonds would apparently like to play one more season before retiring. It's not clear who would sign him, as the Giants are—or should be in serious rebuilding mode, but in the end I think the draw of Barry, especially as he approaches 3,000 hits (not to mention his 1.081 OPS) will be enough for someone to take a chance on him.
Make a wish - Grady Sizemore played Whiffle ball with a bunch of kids in a backyard. How cool is that?

Player News
Player news items are provided by RotoworldBarry Bonds is still intending to play in 2008, but he said it will likely be his last year.
"(Playing) after next year? I don't know. I don't think so," he said. "I don't think two years I can make." Bonds is looking forward to getting the 81 hits he needs for 3,000. "Yeah, I need to win a championship and get 3,000 hits, that would be nice to (end) my career," he said.
According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, Jose Contreras, who is owed another $22 million through 2009, has cleared waivers and could be dealt this month.
How Conteras performs in his return to the rotation on Friday could go a long way towards determining whether there will be much interest in him. The White Sox would have to pick up some salary anyway, but they might be willing to do so. The Dodgers, Padres, Braves and Mariners are among the contenders in need of another starter.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
