Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldTorii Hunter hit a go-ahead solo homer in the eighth and then won the game with a grand slam in the ninth as the Angels beat the Indians 6-4 on Monday night. After SportsTime Ohio had already proclaimed Jhonny Peralta the player of the game. It was a bad call with Joe Borowski still to make an appearance. After Hunter broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth, the Indians scored three times off Francisco Rodriguez and Scot Shields in the ninth. However, it wasn't nearly enough, as Borowski could get just one out before Hunter launched a curveball into the left-field bleachers to end it. It was the 10th career grand slam for Hunter, and it gave him his first five-RBI game since April 6, 2006. He's currently tied with D'Backs teammates Chris Young and Mark Reynolds for the major league lead with four homers.
Scott Spiezio pleaded guilty Monday to misdemeanor drunken driving and hit-and-run charges and received three years probation. Spiezio will also undergo a three-month alcohol program, attend two Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and complete 80 hours of community service because of the incident that took place in December. The Braves surely knew that Spiezio would be facing this kind of punishment when they signing him to a minor league deal last week.
Rich Harden is slated to start Saturday after being scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday. There's still been no reason given for his absence. It might not be an injury if they've already scheduled his return. Chad Gaudin will face the Blue Jays tomorrow.
Justin Duchscherer has been scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday after an MRI showed that he has a strained biceps. "I'm hoping it's just one start," Duchscherer said. "They said I can't throw for a few days and I might need a cortisone injection. When I came in today, I was hoping I'd make my next start, but they said there's inflammation in there we've got to calm down a little bit." The A's have yet to officially announce who will take Duchscherer's place against the Blue Jays, but it looks likely that Chad Gaudin will be activated from the disabled list to make the start after being scratched from his scheduled minor league rehab outing Monday.
Francisco Rodriguez left Monday's game in the ninth inning with an apparent ankle injury. K-Rod probably wasn't hurt anymore than usual, but he had blown the save by allowing two runs against the Indians, and the Angels wanted Scot Shields in there before things could get any worse. Given the way Rodriguez was struggling, he might benefit from a couple of weeks off. If it happens, either Justin Speier or Shields would close. Shields would normally be the backup, but Speier is the better pitcher right now.
Derek Jeter will miss at least one game with a strained left quad, but he's not expected to land on the disabled list. Wilson Betemit will fill in for Jeter on Tuesday and possibly for the rest of the week. The Yankees may call up Alberto Gonzalez to help out defensively if they don't think Jeter will be back within a few days.
Howie Kendrick left Monday's game in the fourth inning with a right thumb injury. Kendrick apparently was hurt in his first at-bat. He stayed in and played a couple of more innings in the field, but Erick Aybar took over next time his spot in the lineup came up. Kendrick is probably day-to-day.
Koji Uehara, who officially qualified for free agency eight days into Japan's season, announced Monday that he intends to play in the U.S. next season. Uehara would have made the jump last winter, but he barely missed being eligible. The 33-year-old right-hander would have viewed as a No. 2 or No. 3 starter a few years ago. Now he's something of a question mark because of arm problems and his team's decision to make him a closer. He would like to return to the rotation and probably will get that opportunity in the majors.

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Game of the Day
It wasn’t a pretty sight, but the Cubs blew a seven-run lead but then went on to defeat the Pirates, 10-8 in 12 innings. There were 19 walks, five errors, three wild pitches and a passed ball in the Pittsburgh home opener. The Cubs scored their winning runs in the 12th without a hit.Cubs 10, Pirates 8 - FINAL
