Great Moments in Timely Pop Culture References

I know I throw a lot of old references out there, but I'd like to think they read better than this one about the Cubs' impotent offense from Gordon Wittennyer of the Chicago Sun-Times:

Chumbawamba and Vanilla Ice have more hit singles than these guys had the last week.

You’re better, but you can’t beat this reference for conveying absolute suckiness. Although I will be totally honest and cop to *still* owning the Vanilla Ice cassette. Hey, I was in college! In West By God! What else was I supposed to listen to?!

I saw Vanilla Ice in concert in Huntington, WV as a part of Marshall’s homecoming festivities in 1990 or 1991.

What comparison did you expect - Daniel Powter and Danity Kane?

And it could have been worse - they could have used the Baha Men.

Isn’t a certain amount of time required to pass before a singer or band is considered a “one hit wonder”?

Hasn’t enough time passed to consider Vanilla Ice and Chumbawumba one-hit wonders?

I’ll not apologize for my love of Tubthumping, though.

Oh, I agree.  I guess my point was directed at the criticism of using dated examples of one-hit wonders.  By their nature, it seems, one-hit wonders are going to be dated.  If a band is relatively new and still making “relevant” music, well, no one’s going to be calling it a one-hit wonder.
