Friday, September 11, 2009Jason Heyward is BA Minor League Player of the YearI don't care about the Francouer precedent. I don't care about Jordan Schafer. Put this guy down as the starting RF for 2010 and let 'er rip, baby:Mississippi manager Phillip Wellman said Heyward is neither especially vocal nor timid. In a word, steady. When does spring training start? Posted by Craig Calcaterra at 4:56pm Comments

“The Francoeur Precedent” should be the name of a Robert Ludlum book. If LOL and FTW hadn’t already existed, they would have had to be invented for this comment. Posted 09/11 at 06:25 PM

Agreed, with all three of you (Craig, Emma, sansho1). Think the Braves pull a Super Two workaround like they did with Hanson and wait until late May to bring up Heyward, claiming it’s for further seasoning in AAA? Seems like they’ve started spinning that already, but they’d know better than I whether or not he’s really ready. All I know is that, whenever it is, I’m excited. Posted 09/11 at 11:18 PM

Except with Heyward that’s a plausible ruse, given his eleven AAA at-bats. That said, I saw this kid play at A+ this year and he’s far better than Jordan Schafer ever was. Braves also have two other kids—Cody Johnson, Fred Freeman—that are nearly as talented, though Johnson could challenge for the strikeout title. Posted 09/12 at 08:42 AM

Yes, the Braves will absolutely wait until late May to bring up Heyward as Jick suggested. I have no doubt about that. Anyone who thinks otherwise isn’t really following the Braves. The Braves have made it very clear by their actions that they are very cost conscious and Heyward’s start in the majors will be delayed to maximize his pre-arbitration time on the team. Schaffer made the team because they basically didn’t have anyone else to give the job and he’s not as good a prospect as Heyward, so they were less worried about maximizing his pre-arbitration time.
