Meet Selena Roberts (and an actually worthy person too)

Here's an event for you, at least if you're in Brooklyn this evening:

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, July 2, at 7:30 p.m., with a night dedicated to baseball. At this free monthly event in DUMBO, Brooklyn, hosted by Gelf and Jan Larsen Art, Scott Price, Selena Roberts, and members of the New York Daily News sports investigative team will read from and talk about their work, and take questions. Price has the wrenching tale of the life and death of [Mike Coolbaugh]. Roberts will speak about her controversial biography of Alex Rodriguez. And the Daily News team will discuss its exposé of Roger Clemens and steroids in baseball.

Admission is free. Go to mock Selena Roberts, but stay to listen to Scott Price, whose Coolbaugh book sounds really, really good.

Price’s book on Coolbaugh (“Heart of the Game”) was really good.  But beware: it’ll get awfully dusty in your neighborhood when you’re reading some of it.

Just in case you were wondering how many librarians read Shysterball: at least one more than you already thought!

Back in the blogspot days I used to be able to see all of the IP addresses that visited the site, and I was always amazed at how many libraries there were. Of course I figured that most of them were people just using public terminals—the homeless are a HUGE ShysterBall demographic—but after ShysterBall Librarian-in-Chief Timmermann, you’re at least the fourth one I’m personally aware of.

I do think it’s amusing that she’s billed second so soon after releasing such a hyped book. Soon no doubt she’ll be admonishing her agent, “I’ve told you a thousand times: Selena Roberts first, puppet show second!”

wait, what is so wrong with Selena Roberts?  I don’t know anything about her besides the basics.

You new here, Mike?

OK, sorry, in the event I am wrong to assume that you’re being sarcastic, Selena Roberts is there to talk about her A-Rod book, and that book representes one of the more egregious examples of drive-by/hit-job reporting in recent years.  Sourceless rumor-mongering disguised as serious work.  Going back further, she handled the press-portion of the public railroading of the Duke Lacrosse players who were wrongly accused and charged with rape, and she refused to retract any of her crap reporting and opinion on that even after the prosecution was shown to be a criminal sham.

Other than that, she’s aces.

Mike—my apologies. I wrote about 10,000 words excoriating Roberts last month and though I live with this blog every day, I shouldn’t assume anyone else does.

She was also part of the hack job landed on the University of Colorado athletics department a few years ago!
