Boston is home to many famous and revered (pun intended) museums and cultural institutions, so the Red Sox Hall of Fame has a very high standard to meet. Remember as well that the city was the lodestone for Puritan judgement during the first two centuries or so of this country’s history. In that light, consider Wade Boggs and you must consider Margo Adams (no relation to John or John Quincy) - sex addiction -  fight on the team bus - 25 players/25 cabs - national embarrassment - terribly bad taste. The criterion is simple - they just don’t like him.

You people don’t already obsess enough about the Hall of Fame—now you get to wail about team’s private decisions about whose number to retire?  Please.

The Red Sox retire the numbers of great players with whom they are on good terms.  Its a celebration and a chance for a big party.  Rice has been around the team for 35 years, Pesky for most of 70.  Boggs and Clemens were great players who left on no-so-great terms. 

Please, let’s not require teams to have some sort of objective measure for this honor, or make them adhere to a hierarchical ordering.  They should be able to honor whoever they want.
