My Morning in Exile

My wife gets to go to a ballgame tonight and I have to stay home with the kids. The more I struggle to make sense of this world, the more confused I become.

  • Apart from silly bluster, what do Joe Morgan and Hugo Chavez have in common? You'll have to click through to find out.

  • The Red Sox number-retirement policy is a joke.

  • The Mets are buyers? OK, sure. That makes sense.

  • I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast, but I'm interContinental when I eat french toast!

  • Dayton Moore is probably right to believe that honesty is not always the best policy.

  • Finally: Rumours? Rumors? No, rumors.

Ah, it might rain. And it's against Scranton, and they don't have anyone I want to see anyway. Grumble.

So Chavez HAS read Moneyball? Or do they have two things in common?

    wait that’s three things…

    silly bluster
    want Concepcion in the Hall
    haven’t read Moneyball
and an almost fanatical devotion to the pope

    4! 4 things in common

It’s funny to watch how worked up Sox fans get over the retired number policy.

The true barometer of how much the Sox adhere to the policy will be when Petey is elected to the Hall of Fame. Arguably the best pitcher in Red Sox history, two of the greatest pitching seasons ever while he was with the Sox, helped them to their first World Series title in 86 years, left the team as amicably as possible these days, and he’s still a fan favorite. The only deterrent being that pesky 10-year rule.

Boston is home to many famous and revered (pun intended) museums and cultural institutions, so the Red Sox Hall of Fame has a very high standard to meet. Remember as well that the city was the lodestone for Puritan judgement during the first two centuries or so of this country’s history. In that light, consider Wade Boggs and you must consider Margo Adams (no relation to John or John Quincy) - sex addiction -  fight on the team bus - 25 players/25 cabs - national embarrassment - terribly bad taste. The criterion is simple - they just don’t like him.

Still, can’t hear Continental without thinking of Christopher Walken (http://www.hulu.com/watch/4191/the-continental)

You people don’t already obsess enough about the Hall of Fame—now you get to wail about team’s private decisions about whose number to retire?  Please.

The Red Sox retire the numbers of great players with whom they are on good terms.  Its a celebration and a chance for a big party.  Rice has been around the team for 35 years, Pesky for most of 70.  Boggs and Clemens were great players who left on no-so-great terms.

Please, let’s not require teams to have some sort of objective measure for this honor, or make them adhere to a hierarchical ordering.  They should be able to honor whoever they want.
