Tuesday, August 11, 2009My Mornng in ExileI may write about stuff that baseball people screw up, but reporters write about it when I lose cases too, so it's all good.I have a legal emergency to attend to this afternoon (note the link at the top of the page), so I may be quiet for a couple of hours. Apologies, but when a judge says that a financially-decimated rust-belt state "doesn't need the money," you can bet there's gonna be an appeal. Posted by Craig Calcaterra at 11:28am Comments

Maybe they can put a rocking chair in the bullpen for Moyer, like the St. Louis Browns did for Satchel Paige. Heck, Paige was two years younger than Moyer is now when he went to the Browns. Posted 08/11 at 12:33 PM

As a Californian, I scoff at your piddling budget issues. Posted 08/11 at 01:02 PM

Seriously. Our two-year budget is $50B. Wasn’t California’s one-year SHORTFALL something like $30B? Posted 08/11 at 01:25 PM

Correct. Our shortfall was $ 26Bn, and that’s NOT allowing for all the creative accounting. Posted 08/11 at 01:52 PM

Yeah, and I’m pretty sure we’re raiding the tobacco kitty as well. Good times in Cali. Posted 08/11 at 03:25 PM

A judge today permanently barred the state from taking more than $250 million in funds designated for anti-smoking programs and using it for Medicaid services and other state functions. Forget Sheffield, I want to know what your firm was smoking when they took this case. And doesn’t Ohio have state attorneys to do this? Not that you don’t need to make a living, but shouldn’t lawyers already on the state payroll be working this one? Posted 08/11 at 08:51 PM

Dude—I am a state attorney now. I’ve worked at the Ohio Attorney General’s office since February. Posted 08/11 at 08:58 PM

Well, say ‘hi’ to the Attorney General for me. We were on the same College Bowl team at the U of C. Posted 08/12 at 09:34 AM

Cool! He’s a five time Jeopardy champ too. He and I don’t get a lot of one-on-one time, of course, but I’m a big fan of trivial minds, so it’s cool to have one for a boss. Posted 08/12 at 09:36 AM

Fortunately, no mention of the attorney(s) at the heart of the state’s failure to prevail. Good luck on appeal.
