Friday, July 24, 2009NBC Comment of the DayI love the readers at NBC. I really do! And despite my worst fears going in, I'd say 99.9% of them are reasonable people. But then there's that .1% . . .Here's a comment that came in response to my saying -- with my tongue very obviously in my cheek -- that it would be the "bestest thing ever" if a conspiracy theory arose out of the fact that the same umpire was behind the plate for both of Buehrle's no-nos: I don't care if it is tounge in cheek, written while you were drunk or forced to post something with a gun to your head. No "writer" with an ounce of self-respect would ever allow his name to be used in conjuction with an article with the non-word "bestest" in it. No word on whether self-respecting readers should know how to spell "tongue" and "conjunction" in the same comment in which he's giving the author hell for his professionalism. Click over there. You wouldn't believe the level of insecurity that comes out of White Sox fans when someone suggests, even in jest, that something a Sox player did was tainted. I’ve always been surprised that the Sox play footage from Field of Dreams to open their games. Do they really want to remind us about 1919? Posted 07/24 at 09:41 PM

My personal favorite over there today was in the same thread where the guy told you to go get a real job. Posted 07/24 at 09:52 PM

Speaking of comments, you have to read BBTF’s (there are 50 and counting). Reads like the draft for “What Women Want”, or maybe “Fatal Attraction”. Posted 07/24 at 11:11 PM

I talked to the Sekret Writing Masterz. They said it was OK, as long as you made up for it with two “Sesquipedialian"s and selectively placed “rugose”. Posted 07/24 at 11:48 PM

Aw, it’s so cute that you think 99.9% of the commenters at Circling the Bases are reasonable. Posted 07/25 at 12:50 AM

This maybe incorrect but I’m sure there is/was some rogue philosopher somewhere that may/might have agreed that having people critical of you is a good thing in a sense that your writing is getting a rouse in people even though it is negative. Also on top of being able to write things that spike emotion in people (even though the blog piece that started this mini crusade of people with questionable sanity was clealy more of a pun than anything) this also proves that you are getting more people’s attention (hence more traffic, hence more rep) despite a blog about a subject that has been blogged/written about numerous times. Granted this reader should have done a better job criticizing you in a more intellectual way. I’m not a very smart person. Most of what I say/type is largely ignored even when I do my best to state whatever it is I’m thinking. Anyway for what it’s worth Craig I think you are good at this whole blogging thing. I don’t mean to brown nose and certainly don’t aim for some comment of the day thing but in my own little world I would have to say you are on my bestest blogger list. Posted 07/25 at 01:30 AM

I dunno, Bill. You’re about five million times more thoughtful and articulate than most internet posters I’ve had the misfortune to encounter. Keep it up, man. Posted 07/25 at 04:45 AM

Bill—thanks! Nick—Yeah, I’m maybe being a bit generous, but it’s still true that the comments over there aren’t as bad as I had imagined they’d be going in. True, just about everyone who adds to the party there came to it via THT, but I think there’s only been one or two guys who have simply polluted comments threads with obnoxiousness. Thank you. That thread was glorious. Here’s hoping that it hasn’t reached it’s conclusion. Good times. Posted 07/25 at 10:50 AM

Perhaps, the reader’s first mistake lies in that he/she hinges their argument on whether A Shyster has any self-respect. Posted 07/25 at 02:13 PM
