The over on Wood for trips to DL is 2 and the over for Pavano for days on the Dl is 35. Side bets for AJ Burnett are acceptable: Over for innings pitch in a non-contract year 140. Posted 01/06 at 09:19 PM

Given the Indians day-late-and-a-dollar-short history (and karma) I’d bet that no DL records are set. Pavano will stay relatively healthy, he just won’t be all that good. Woods will be above average, but not lights out. If Cliff Lee pitches well (no one expects a repeat of last season) the Indians will compete, but just miss winning the division. You heard it here first. Well, maybe second. Or maybe 137th, or maybe….... Posted 01/07 at 07:51 AM

Come on, this is a pretty low-risk move. Worst case, he ends up on the DL or stinks and you cut him. They clearly weren’t going to pony up for anything better than Pavano. Posted 01/07 at 10:23 AM

I don’t disagree, Pete. DL jokes aside, I think it’s a fine move for the Tribe. If he’s healthy, I think he’ll be a fairly effective and useful pitcher at a nice price. If he’s not, hey, they’re not out a ton of money and they have no long term commitments. Posted 01/07 at 10:25 AM

I think we all agree that it’s great to make it to the majors and have 1 season that can keep on paying dividends throughout your career. But in Carl Pavano’s case, he really hit the lottery. I can’t imagine how his teammates must feel in Cleveland, although he is only rumored to be guaranteed $ 1.5M. There was a lot of talk out of New York how he just quit trying, way worse than Manny, according to what I read. Of course, all of that was “not for attribution” kind of stuff, but one hopes Shapiro took a hard look at those comments.
