While it sucks for a guy like Tom Glavine, a 300+ game winner, to get released like that after showing some promise in his rehab the move totally makes sense.

Frank Wren doesn’t get paid to make us fans from other teams feel good about giving guys like Glavine a shot at coming back with the team they started with to “give it one last go” or to “go out on their terms”. He gets paid to put a winning baseball team on the field and they believe that Tommy Hanson is a piece of that, and Glavine isn’t. I don’t disagree.

I just am not looking forward to the time when some tough choices need to be made about David Oritz if he continues his year long tour de suck.

There comes a time in every ballplayer’s career when it it time to hang up the cleats.  While that time is determined by Mother Nature, the duty of recognizing the signs fall on one of two entities:  the ballplayer himself; or the team that issues him his paychecks and counts on him to contribute on the field.  I believe that in the vast majority of cases, the ballplayer makes the call, and it’s usually between seasons.  In this case, however, the team made the decision, and it was in the middle of the season, so it got a lot more hot press.  Sad to see him go, especially under these circumstances, but it’s a decision that needed to be made, and could/should have been made by the man himself…..

Don’t be so wishy-washy Sam. Tell us how you really feel. I’ve seen Hanson pitch, and I don’t think he’s ready for major league hitters. He doesn’t hide the ball at all, his fastball doesn’t move enough, and he does not have sufficient command of his other pitches. He may be good later, but I think he’s going to get lit up now.

It is LONG SINCE TIME for the Atlanta Braves to move on with Glavine and give one of the “kids” the ball.  Tommy Hanson is as ready as he will ever be to pitch in the show.  And poor Glavine will get picked up by some team still in the race later this season.  As for Smoltz, this Braves fan ALSO believes that Smoltz is a sanctimonious prick, and I, too, hope his shoulder falls off.
