Monday, January 12, 2009Rickey and RiceTwenty-eight voters left Rickey off, so we have both his election percentage and a nice read on the insanity level of the BBWAA.I've said all I really care to say about it. meh…kind of HoF’ed out, especially after watching the idiot BBWAA member on the MLB Network panel who bragged about voting for Rice, Mattingly, and Jack Morris, but not for Blyleven (even H.R. was trying to talk him out of it) and Tim Raines. His arguments were what you would expect. *sigh* Posted 01/12 at 04:02 PM

Two people voted for Jay Bell. That about sums up Hall of Fame voting… Posted 01/12 at 04:31 PM

How could 28 voters have not voted for Rickey? Even when he was playing hearts in the clubhouse for the Mets, he still changed the game when at the plate. Jesse Orosco received a vote? And SIX writers thought that Mo Vaughn was a HOF’er? It makes me wonder… Posted 01/12 at 04:42 PM

I bet if you ask all 28 of those voters if Rickey belongs in the Hall of Fame, they will say yes. They are probably just people that either a) hated his antics, or b)don’t vote for first timers. I think I might be the only reader who wanted Jim Rice in the Hall. Might be Red Sox fan bias tho… Posted 01/12 at 05:07 PM

Did the BBWAA have an input in helping to create the BCS as neither make a whole lot of sense? Posted 01/12 at 05:08 PM

Jim Rice lives two towns over from me. In October I was at a local self-serve gas station and this fancy Escalade pulls in behind me. A very handsome African-American male in a nice sweat suit gets out and starts to fill up his tank. I literally did a double take. Jim Ed Rice is gassing up right next to me! As a young Sox fan in the 70’s Jim was one of my favorite players. I worked up the nerve and spoke to him. “Mr. Rice, I don’t want to bother you, but growing up, you were one of my idols.” He nods and says “Thanks”. Then I add, “You were my mother’s second favorite Red Sox after Ted Williams.” He chuckled at that and broke into a wide grin. I wished him luck on his possible induction to the Hall and he was very gracious. So, the fan in me is happy that he is in, but I do think hat his career wasn’t quite enough. But now I can say that I met a baseball Hall of Famer at a gas station. Posted 01/12 at 07:23 PM

I can’t pay any attention anymore. Seeing 28 voters NOT vote for Henderson while 6 voters DID vote for Mo…it just makes my blood boil too much. Posted 01/12 at 08:44 PM

I would love to see all 28 voters lined up and be forced to explain why they didn’t vote Rickey in. I can’t see how any of the 28 people could come up with any sort of valid baseball-related reasoning, but it might be fun to hear them try. Then again, Rickey still managed to garner a slightly higher percentage of the vote than Willie Mays did 30 years ago, so this display of sheer insanity by the BBWAA is sadly unsurprising. Nextel should do a spin-off commercial with their walkie-talkies, “What if the BBWAA ran the world?” Think of all the fun. Posted 01/12 at 10:26 PM

28? Really? You know, if everyone felt like those 28, no one would get voted in the first time. Then, it would become a big thing to become elected on the first time. Then, it becomes a big thing to be elected the second time. Then, well ... no one is elected. Posted 01/13 at 02:23 AM

So makes it in 2010? Dawson? Blyleven? Larkin? Alomar? Someone else? I can’t see NO ONE making it. That’s just not good for business in quaint little Cooperstown.
