Whenever.Monday, April 06, 2009River Ave. Blues Pledge DriveThe guys at River Ave. Blues have a pledge drive going to benefit the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation:Last year we decided to use the popularity of RAB for some good, creating a pledge drive dedicated to raising money for The Jorge Posada Foundation. We based the pledges on the number of strikeouts recorded by The Big Three of Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy, and even though things didn’t go according to plan we still raised $1050 for Posada’s cause. That was a tough break tying last year's drive to Kennedy, Hughes, and Chamberlain, but I think they're on the right track going with offense this year. Like they said: it's rough out there now, but if you have the time and ability to read baseball blogs, others have it rougher than you, so please, anything you can do to help is most appreciated. I wanted to thank you for linking to this post, and just add my voice to yours in urging others to make a donation to Torre’s foundation. As a Red Sox fan, I’m certainly no fan of the Yankees. But I was a domestic violence counselor for a few years, and I know how overwhelming a problem it is…
When millions and billions of dollars are being tossed around to Wall Street or the war, it’s easy to forget how much money we’re really talking about. You could probably have funded my entire domestic violence office staff for a couple hundred thousand, including salaries, rent, equipment, heat, and electricity. And you wouldn’t believe how much people need the help—far more than we could ever provide.
We have lots of suicide-prevention hotlines and services, but domestic violence shelters are really the closest thing we have to homicide prevention. Even a small donation from you would mean a lot—I know it would mean a lot to me personally to know that people were giving their hard-earned money even during tough times, and I know it would mean even more to lots of others.
