Whenever.Thursday, March 05, 2009The Rites of SpringRoyce the Hack -- ShysterBall's Foreign Correspondent from the Republic of Texas and daytime next-door neighbor of the Ballpark in Arlington -- has a dispatch to warm you up on this late winter's day:The grounds crew next door is in its usual pre-opening day fever. There is an armada of those little John Deere mule trucks zooming around all day updating and replacing signs, dressing the edges of landscaping and replacing garbage cans that they put into storage five-odd months ago. Baseball is in the air, my friend. It's a great thing. They really do a nice job with the stadium - it is beautifully maintained and the city works hard to keep the surrounding area in step. The Spring clouds and dowpours out here mean only one thing: Manny Ramirez signed with the Dodgers. The SF fans are dusting off their longjohns and insults and prepaing to welcome Manny to AT & T Park. And while everyone is talking about the challenge Manny has facing Lincecum, nobody has mentioned the challenge Barry Zito has in facing Manny. Across the Bay, where the beloved A’s dwell, old guys who can hit a little are reporting to camp, displacing young guys who hit not. For a wet, gray season, we all believe we can beat the Angels. Warmer indeed.
I am going to be in Tuscon next weekend for a nerdy baseball conference, and will see a couple of spring training games. But you know what: spring training sucks. I mean really. Its fun to hear the sounds and the smell the smells and all that, but it is challenge to get through more than five innings without falling asleep.
So, yes, I am ready for real baseball.
