Perhaps the best one:The Yanks are not the destination they were in 2000, 2001, 2002, when they were making regular World Series appearances. The team is getting old. The beat writers are incessantly negative towards everyone but Mo and Jeter. Ownership is erratic, and that might be a very kind term to call Hank and Hal. And they play in the AL East, home of the reigning AL Champs and the 2007 World Series Champs. It's rough out there. It's been a long time since the "the Yankees can just buy whatever they want" meme has held true. What's more, I think the Yankees know that. If they didn't, I don't think they come out of the gate with the offer they did. CC may yet wind up with the Yankees, but the notion that it's a no-brainer is a mistaken one. I figured this was going to be the MO, since nothing Hank seems to vent about ever seems to happen. Although, if I was BC I would probably want to smack him a good one at some point, just on general principle. Posted 12/05 at 11:34 AM

Well, George did cede control to Hal, not Hank. It seems that with Hank blustering all the time, Hal has had a relatively free hand. But not being on the east coast, I don’t get the daily beat coming out of NY. Posted 12/05 at 12:10 PM

I think that Hal was named Chairman of the the YES family of businesses, which includes the Yanks. I also think that Hank is at least nominally the head of the Baseball Operations. Jason pretty much lays it all out. The most significant point is that it’s still only December 5th. Cashman has a clue, and he seems to actually be in control. He’s already gotten Nick Swisher for free, he’s trying to rob Colletti for Cano, and they’re in on all of the big free agents. I don’t get the hand-wringing at all, outside of the typical “We’re the Yankees! These guys should be paying us for the honor to be a Yankee!” stuff. Posted 12/05 at 02:31 PM

Yeah Renteria for 2 years at $ 18M total. Law likes the deal because it’s short, and predicated on Renteria having decent offensive numbers. I’m not excited about it, because Renteria showed up at camp last year out of shape, and once that kind of thing starts it has a way of snowballing. The Giants need some offense to go with the pitching they’ve got. Although, it would be cool watching all those right handed hitters trying to push one out against CC in the fog and wind blowing in from left. Don’t you think that maybe Hank and Hal are going to play some kind of “good cop, bad cop” game with everyone? What I mean is that Hank will be all bluster while Hal does the sensible things behind the scenes.
